Red Stitch Actors Theatre
Red Stitch Actors Theatre is an ensemble theatre company based in Melbourne, Australia. Established in 2001 and with its first season in 2002, Red Stitch has presented over 100 contemporary plays. These include works from international playwrights such as Edward Albee, Annie Baker, Jez Butterworth, Martin Crimp, Amy Herzog, Sarah Kane, Neil LaBute and Simon Stephens, and more recently Australian playwrights such as Melissa Bubnic, Tom Holloway and Joanna Murray-Smith. Red Stitch's 80-seat theatre is a converted church hall on Chapel Street, St Kilda East opposite the Astor Theatre. The company was based until 2003 in an industrial building in Inkerman Street, St Kilda. Red Stitch occasionally plays seasons at Arts Centre Melbourne's Fairfax Studio and tours to other cities across Australia. Chapel Street is a street in Melbourne, Victoria, running along the inner suburbs of South Yarra, Prahran, Windsor, St Kilda and St Kilda East. Richard Bean
Richard Anthony Bean (born 11 June 1956) is an English playwright. Early years Born in East Hull, Bean was educated at Hull Grammar School, and then studied social psychology at Loughborough University, graduating with a 2:1 BSc Hons. He then worked as an occupational psychologist, having previously worked in a bread plant for a year and a half after leaving school. Between 1989 and 1994, Bean also worked as a comedian and went on to be one of the writers and performers of the sketch show ''Control Group Six'' (BBC Radio) which was nominated for a Writers Guild Award. Theatre career In 1995 he wrote the libretto for Stephen McNeff's opera ''Paradise of Fools'', which premiered at the Unicorn Theatre. His first full-length play, ''Of Rats and Men'', set in a psychology lab, was staged at the Canal Cafe Theatre in 1996 and went on to the Edinburgh Festival. Green Room Awards
The Green Room Awards are peer awards which recognise excellence in cabaret, dance, drama, fringe theatre, musical theatre and opera in Melbourne. The awards were started in 1982 when Blair Edgar and Steven Tandy formed the Green Room Awards Association. The inaugural awards ceremony was held in 1984 at the Melbourne Concert Hall. The Astor Theatre
The Astor Theatre is a classic, single-screen revival movie theatre located in the inner Melbourne suburb of St Kilda, that has a long and illustrious history. The site at 1-3 Chapel Street was first used for public entertainment in 1913 when Thomas Alford established the Diamond Theatre, which shared the site with a confectioner and livery stables. Part vaudeville theatre and part cinema, in 1914 it was renamed the Rex before closing in 1917. By 1924 the site had been occupied by a motor garage. History In 1935 Alford sold the property to Frank O'Collins. After council approval was received in October, demolition of the site's original buildings commenced in December. Construction began shortly afterwards, O'Collins having commissioned architect Ron Morton Taylor (whose earlier work included involvement on the State Theatre) and construction firm Clements Langford.
