Red Circle Coffee
Red Circle Coffee was a branded line of coffee sold by the American supermarket chain A&P, the middle tier of the company's coffee trio. Introduced in September, 1919 , it was bracketed by the exiting brands of Bokar above and 8 O'Clock Coffee below it. History Historical research of A&P newspaper advertising from 1919 through the 1920s has provided the most insight into the composition of Red Circle as well as of 8 O’Clock and Bokar. 8 O’Clock was described in 1920s advertising as being straight ‘Santos’ coffee. This was particularly emphasized subsequent to the US Sesquicentennial Exposition hosted by the City of Philadelphia in 1926 and where A&P hosted a building with ‘Santos’ on top. 8 O’Clock was recognized with an award for excellence at the exposition, a fact emblazoned on the 8 O’Clock packaging itself through to the 1932 rebrand. The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, better known as A&P, was an American chain store, chain of grocery stores that operated from 1859 to 2015. From 1915 through 1975, A&P was the largest grocery retailer in the United States (and, until 1965, the largest U.S. retailer of any kind). A&P was considered an American icon that, according to ''The Wall Street Journal'', "was as well known as McDonald's or Google is today".. At its peak in the 1940s, A&P captured 10% of total US grocery spending. Bokar Coffee
Bokar Coffee is a dark roasted brand of coffee originally owned by the American supermarket chain A&P and sold in A&P stores beginning in 1919. Bokar blend is described as: "A select blend of 100% Arabica coffee beans, named for two famous coffee-producing areas in Colombia: Bogota and Cartagena. When ground extra fine, makes a spectacular espresso." In 1979, A&P licensed its brands division, Compass Foods, Inc., to sell Eight O'Clock, Bokar and Red Circle coffee to other retailers including competing supermarket chains. Eight O'Clock Coffee is an American brand of coffee products currently manufactured by the Eight O'Clock Coffee Company, a subsidiary of Tata Consumer Products, which is headquartered in Mumbai, India; its coffee production plant is in Landover, Maryland. Tata Global Beverages has owned Eight O'Clock Coffee since 2006. Eight O'Clock Coffee was created by The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (later A&P) in 1859, in the latter company's founding year. Despite selling off the brand in 2003, A&P continued to sell Eight O'Clock Coffee in its family of stores until the supermarkets closed in late 2015.
