Realengracht
The Realengracht is a canal in Amsterdam, in the Centrum district. Location The canal is on the south side of the Realeneiland and connects the junction of the Smallepadsgracht and the Prinseneilandsgracht with the Westerdok near the Zandhoek. Prinseneiland and Bickerseiland are to the south of the canal. Bickersgracht enters the center of the canal from the south. The Realengracht is the only canal in Amsterdam that has two wooden drawbridges, bridges nos. 316 and 320. Prinseneilandsgracht
The Prinseneilandsgracht is a canal in the Centrum district of Amsterdam. It runs between Prinseneiland, an artificial island, to the east and the mainland to the west. Until after World War II (1939–45) the canal was bordered almost exclusively by warehouses and factories. Location The Prinseneilandsgracht defines the western boundary of Prinseneiland, one of the three artificial islands that make up the Westelijke Eilanden (Western Islands). It connects the Eilandsgracht to the south with the Realengracht and Smallepadsgracht to the north. It is crossed by the Sloterdijkerbrug (bridge no. 321), which carries Galgenstraat from the island across to Nieuwe Teertuinen on the mainland, from where it continues as Sloterdijkstraat. Smallepadsgracht
The Smallepadsgracht is a short and narrow canal in the Amsterdam-Centrum district of Amsterdam. It is in the Westelijke Eilanden (Western Islands) neighborhood. Description The Smallepadsgracht is on the west side of the Realeneiland and connects the Zoutkeetsgracht with the Realengracht and Prinseneilandsgracht. Unusually, there are no bridges over this canal, nor is there a quay that runs along the canal. Vierwindenstraat on Realeneiland terminates on the canal. Smallepadsgracht originated in the defenses of Amsterdam added outside the Haarlemmerdijk and Hogendijk during the expansion of the city, with the active advice of Maurice, Prince of Orange. A path ran along the strongholds, ramparts and mills, the Smalle Pad (Narrow Path). The counterpart of the Lijnbaansgracht outside the dike was a ditch along that Narrow Path, sometimes called the Smallepadsgracht. Bickersgracht
The Bickersgracht () is a canal in Amsterdam that runs between the Westelijke Eilanden (Western Islands), and a street on one of these islands, Bickerseiland. Location The Bickersgracht runs in a north-south direction along the west side of Bickerseiland, between that island and Prinseneiland. The Galgenbrug (bridge no. 315) runs across the canal between Galgenstraat on Prinseneiland and Kleine Bickersstraat on Bickerseiland. The bridge, originally a double seesaw, now a fixed bridge, was probably called that because there was a good view of the gallows of the Volewijck on the other side of the IJ. Bickersgracht street does not run along the water but on the other side of the houses along the canal. The street is paved with old cobblestones. There are seven 17th and 18th century buildings on the Bickersgracht that have been designated as national monuments: six residential houses and Pakhuis de Faam (Bickersgracht 256), a double warehouse from around 1650. Amsterdam-Centrum is the inner-most borough and historical city centre of Amsterdam, Netherlands, containing the majority of the city's landmarks. Established in 2002, Amsterdam-Centrum was the last area in the city to be granted the status of self-governing borough. The borough is only 8.04 km2 large and covers the old innercity and the UNESCO-listed Amsterdam canal belt. In 2013, the borough had approximately 85,000 inhabitants, who on average had the second-highest income per household in the city (after Amsterdam-Zuid) and one of the highest in the country. Canals Of Amsterdam
Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands, has more than of ''grachten'' (canals), about 90 islands and 1,500 bridges. The three main canals (Herengracht, Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht), dug in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age, form concentric belts around the city, known as the Grachtengordel.
