Real Radio XS
Real Radio XS was a radio station brand operated by Real and Smooth Ltd (formerly GMG Radio) based in Salford, Greater Manchester, broadcasting a variety of peak-time news, rock music and talk output. The Manchester-based version of the service was broadcast to Greater Manchester on FM, and to a number of areas on DAB: the closure of the MXR regional multiplexes ended most digital carriage of the service, with the last remaining digital transmission, to Yorkshire, ending in 2014. The other Real Radio XS service, covering Paisley and Renfrewshire on FM and central belt Scotland digitally, became Xfm Scotland in 2014 following Global's purchase of the franchise, before closing entirely in 2015. The Manchester frequency now transmits as XS Manchester under the control of Communicorp UK, whilst the Scottish license was re-advertised by Ofcom and now carries Nation Broadcasting-owned Nation Radio Scotland. Frequency modulation (FM) is the encoding of information in a carrier wave by varying the instantaneous frequency of the wave. Salford Jets
Salford Jets are a British rock band that first formed in 1976 and performed until the early 1980s. The band re-formed in 2002. Biography The band originally included Mike Sweeney, later of Piccadilly Radio and its later incarnations, breakfast DJ at Real Radio XS, Capital Gold and now morning presenter at BBC Radio Manchester. The other band members were Diccon Hubbard (bass), Rod Gerrard (guitar), Don Mac (guitar), Dave Morris (drums), Geoff Kerry (keyboards) and Johnny Sax. It was this line-up that would back Wayne Fontana as The Mindbenders for a short period. The band had a Monday night residency on the "Top Road" in Pendlebury Swinton at The Duke of Wellington from '79-80.They had a hit single in 1980 called "Who You Looking At?" on RCA Records, which reached number 72 in the UK Singles Chart. Real Radio XS (Digital)
Real Radio XS (branded Rock Radio prior to September 2011) was a classic rock independent local radio service broadcast on DAB in various parts of the United Kingdom. It was formerly part of the Rock Radio group of stations owned by GMG Radio, and whilst initially a separate station, latterly carried programming sourced from 106.1 Real Radio XS in Manchester. When first launched, the digital service was known as Rock Radio North East, and was a dedicated digital-only service for the region which had its own programmes presented locally, broadcast from the complex at the Team Valley that also accommodated the group's regional FM stations Real Radio (North East) and 97.5 Smooth Radio. Breakfast was presented every morning (7am - 12noon) by Mark Gregory; John Kirby would present the weekday "drivetime" programme (2-7pm); and Kelly Scott would present evenings from 7pm until 12midnight. MXR Yorkshire
MXR Yorkshire was a regional commercial digital radio multiplex in the United Kingdom, which served Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire. The multiplex closed in June 2015 after the shareholders Global Radio & Arqiva decided not to renew the licence. Radio X is a British National commercial radio station focused on alternative music, primarily indie rock, and owned by Global. Radio X launched in 1989 as a pirate radio station, a licensed London-wide station in 1997 and nationally in 2015 under the rebranded nand, Xfm. The station has employed a number of personalities that have since gone on to greater fame including Russell Brand, Karl Pilkington, Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, Simon Pegg, Christian O'Connell, Justin Lee Collins, Adam and Joe, Alex Zane, Tim Lovejoy, Dermot O'Leary and Josh Widdicombe. Capital Scotland (formerly known as Beat 106, XFM Scotland, and later Galaxy Scotland) is a regional radio station owned by Communicorp UK and operated by Global. It broadcasts to Scotland's Central Belt, an area surrounding the two cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. History Beat 106 Beat 106 was established by the Big Beat Group, headed up by a group of nightclub promoters from Glasgow, and first aired on 19 November 1999 as a new rock and dance station. Notable presenters at launch included Graham Stewart and Jim Gellatly.
