Andrew Raynes (born 7 April 1973), commonly known as "Stumpy", is an English former strongman, powerlifter, and bodybuilder. He was a multiple time finalist in Britain's Strongest Man and a finalist of the 2001 World's Strongest Man contest. Career Raynes began competing in bodybuilding as a junior competitor in 1990, winning the NABBA Junior Mr. Northeast contest in 1990 and again in 1994. He would also go on to win the NABBA Junior Mr. Britain contest in 1994. Raynes won the 1998 NABBA Mr. England overall title, and the Mr. Universe Amateur title in the short class in 1998 & 1999. Raynes competed in the World Powerlifting Congress organization, winning the WPC Junior British Powerlifting Championships as well as the WPC Junior European Powerlifting Championships in 1995. John Crawshaw Raynes VC (28 April 1887 – 12 November 1929) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Raynes, from Sheffield in the West Riding of Yorkshire, joined the Royal Horse and Field Artillery in 1904 and served until 1912, then joined the Leeds police force. However, he was still suffering from the effects of gas poisoning contracted during his VC action and struggled to continue his duties as a policeman, eventually being forced to take a desk job. Michael Bernard Raynes (born 15 October 1987) is an English former professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Stockport Town. Career Born in Wythenshawe, Greater Manchester, Raynes began his career as a trainee at Stockport County. He made his debut in a 2–1 FA Cup second round replay defeat at Swansea City in December 2004, two months after his 17th birthday, and became a regular in the first team during the second half of the 2004–05 season. Thomas Arthur Raynes (18 July 1835 – 6 March 1914) was an English cricketer. Raynes was a right-handed batsman. He was born at Ripe, Sussex. Raynes made his first-class debut for Sussex against an All-England Eleven in 1854 at The Dripping Pan, Lewes. He next appeared in first-class cricket in 1856, playing for the Gentlemen of Surrey and Sussex against the Gentlemen of England at Lord's, while in 1859 he played for Gentlemen of the South against the Gentlemen of the North at The Oval. His second first-class appearance for Sussex came in 1861 against the Marylebone Cricket Club. He made five further first-class appearances for the county, the last of which came against Middlesex in 1864 at the Royal Brunswick Ground, Hove. William Robert Raynes (26 January 1871 – 30 January 1966) was a British politician. He was a socialist Member of Parliament, alderman and Mayor of Derby. He helped plan a scheme for the River Derwent and there is a major road in Derby – Raynesway – that is named after him. Life Raynes was born on 26 January 1871 at Chasetown, Staffordshire, England. He was the son of Derbyshire-born Henry Eley Raynes and Phebe Raynes. The family moved many times during William's childhood and he was educated at nine different schools in nine different parts of the country.
