Ravenshoe ( ) is a rural town and locality in the Tablelands Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Ravenshoe had a population of 1,400 people. Geography Ravenshoe is on the Atherton Tableland in Far North Queensland. It is located south west of the regional centre, Cairns. At above sea level, Ravenshoe is the highest town in Queensland, with Queensland's highest pub "The Ravenshoe Hotel" (formerly the "Tully Falls Hotel" until 2014) and highest railway station. It also has the Millstream Falls, the widest waterfall in Australia. Traditionally the main industry in Ravenshoe was timber, but since 1987, when the government made of surrounding rainforest world heritage listed, the main industries have been tourism, beef and dairy farming. Geography From south to north Tumoulin is a flat valley with Diddleluma Creek flowing through it, elevation approx above sea level. Dyirbal People
The Dyirbal, also called Jirrbal, are an Aboriginal Australian people living in northern Queensland, both one tribe (the ''Dyirbalŋan'' or 'Tully River blacks') and a group of related contiguous peoples included under that label as the Dyirbal tribes. They lived on the upper Murray river of the Atherton Tableland. Their name is used as a generic term to refer specifically to one of eight groups, the others being Yidinji, Ngadyan, Mamu, Girramay, Wargamay, Waruŋu and Mbabaɽam. Language Dyirbal belongs to the Dyirbalic branch of the Pama–Nyungan language family. It is one of several dialects, for ''Giramay'', ''Mamu'', ''Dyiru'', ''Gulŋay'', and ''Ngajan''. It is an ergative language allowing words in the sentence in any order. The Tablelands Region is a local government area in Far North Queensland, Australia inland from the city of Cairns. Herberton, Queensland
Herberton is a rural town and locality in the Tablelands Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Herberton had a population of 855 people. Geography Herberton is on the Atherton Tableland in Far North Queensland. It is situated high on the Great Dividing Range south-west of Atherton. Vegetation ranges from tropical rainforest to the east, wet sclerophyll forests to the north and east and open sclerophyll forests and woodlands to the north and west. History The first European exploration of this area, part of the traditional land of the Dyirbal, was undertaken in 1875 by James Venture Mulligan. Henry Kingsley (2 January 1830 – 24 May 1876) was an English novelist, brother of the better-known Charles Kingsley. Atherton Tableland
The Atherton Tableland is a fertile plateau which is part of the Great Dividing Range in Queensland, Australia. The principal river flowing across the plateau is the Barron River. It was dammed to form an irrigation reservoir named Lake Tinaroo. Tinaroo Hydro, a small 1.6 MW hydroelectric power station, is located near the spillway. Physiography This area is a distinct physiographic section of the larger North Queensland Highlands province, which in turn is part of the larger East Australian Cordillera physiographic division. Millstream, Queensland
Millstream is a rural locality in the Tablelands Region, Queensland, Australia. In the Millstream had a population of 1,246 people. Geography Millstream is bounded to the west by the Wild River, while The Millstream flows from east to south-west through the locality. Their confluence which creates the Herbert River is just to the south-west of the locality in neighbouring Innot Hot Springs. Smaller farm blocks are found in the southern part of the locality, just to the north of The Millstream, where the land is flatter (about 730 metres above sea level). However, much of the locality is mountainous, rising to unnamed peaks of about 1000 metres above sea level); this area is not developed. Maalan, Queensland
Maalan is a locality in the Tablelands Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Maalan had a population of 26 people. Geography Maalan is a rural locality predominantly used for dairy farming which occurs in the valley areas (elevation approximately 900–1000 metres above sea level). In the west of the locality is the Cardwell Range with peaks to 1170 metres; part of this land is within the Tully Falls National Park. In the north is the Maalan National Park.
