Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School
Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School (technically Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Senior High School) is a small high school in Ravena, New York, about 9 miles south of Albany, New York on U.S. Route 9W. It is known for its football and wrestling. They also have some individual state champions in track and field.; and it is located across the street from the Lafarge cement factory. RCS has numerous clubs, including art, drama club, French, FBLA, key club, S.A.D.D, G.S.A, and Gaming club Accessed October 25, 2022. Football at Ravena is their most popular and followed sport. Ravena is a village in Albany County, New York, United States. The population was 3,271 in the 2020 census an increase of 3 over the 2010 census. The village is in the southeast part of the town of Coeymans. History The village of Ravena incorporated in 1914. Prior to its incorporation, it was known as "Coeymans Junction," but the name was changed to "Ravena" to avoid confusion with another hamlet in the town, " Coeymans Landing." In 1894, a post office was established in Coeymans Junction bearing the name ''Ravena''. The name source of the post office (and ultimately the village) is unclear. Some believe that the village's proximity to cliffs on its western boundary lent to the area being referred to as ''the ravine''. Others feel that a brand of flour, ''Raven'', was the inspiration behind the name. The Israel Shear House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Selkirk, New York
Selkirk is a hamlet in the town of Bethlehem, Albany County, New York, United States. It is located south of the city of Albany and is a suburb of that city. A major freight railyard operated by the Selkirk Subdivision of CSX Transportation is located there; all of the CSX freight traffic going to or from Boston goes through Selkirk on its way to points north, south or west. The route is also used by traffic from New York City via the Alfred H. Smith Memorial Bridge to points west, a detour known as the Selkirk hurdle. Also in Selkirk is Audubon International, a non-profit environmental educational organization. Coeymans, New York
Coeymans is a town in Albany County, New York, United States. The population was 7,256 in the 2020 census, a decline from 7,418 at the 2010 census. The town is named after an early settler, who was the patent-holder for the area. The town is in the southeastern part of the county, south of Albany. The Powell & Minnock Brick Yard, just north of the Hamlet on Rt. 144, was used as the assembly site for a new swing span for the 145th Street Bridge in 2006. The site was chosen because of a lack of space closer to the city. History Barent Pieteres Koijemans first arrived in 1639 from Holland. He became an apprentice at a mill owned by the Van Rensselaers. He purchased the land and obtained a patent in 1673. Coeymans was formed from part of the town of Watervliet in 1791. In 1815, part of the town was used to create the new town of Westerlo.
