Rattlesnake, Tampa
Rattlesnake is a neighborhood and former unincorporated community located in the South Tampa district of Tampa, Florida. History Rattlesnake was founded in the 1930s by George K. End of Arcadia, who opened a cannery for rattlesnake meat (which billed itself at the "World's only Rattlesnake Cannery") on the intersection of Gandy Boulevard and Bridge Street. The community came to have a post office, a general store, a filling station and a restaurant, as well as a snake pit attraction for visitors. End later died after being bitten by one of his own rattlesnakes. In the 1950s the area was annexed by the city of Tampa. Geography There are no official boundaries for Rattlesnake. Old Tampa Bay
Tampa Bay is a large natural harbor and shallow estuary connected to the Gulf of Mexico on the west-central coast of Florida, comprising Hillsborough Bay, McKay Bay, Old Tampa Bay, Middle Tampa Bay, and Lower Tampa Bay. The largest freshwater inflow into the bay is the Hillsborough River, which flows into Hillsborough Bay in downtown Tampa. Many other smaller rivers and streams also flow into Tampa Bay, resulting in a large watershed area. The shores of Tampa Bay were home to the Weedon Island Culture and then the Safety Harbor culture for thousands of years. These cultures relied heavily on Tampa Bay for food, and the waters were rich enough that they were one of the few Native American cultures that did not have to farm. South Florida Railroad
The South Florida Railroad was a railroad from Sanford, Florida, to Tampa, Florida, becoming part of the Plant System in 1893 and the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1902. It served as the southernmost segment of the Atlantic Coast Line's main line. The line remains in service today and is now part of the Central Florida Rail Corridor in the Orlando metro area. The rest of the line remains under the ownership of CSX Transportation as part of their A Line. History The Lake Monroe and Orlando Railroad was organized in 1875 with a charter to build from the St. Johns River port of Sanford south to Orlando.
