Rapid Intervention Battalion, Cameroon
The Rapid Intervention Battalion (''Bataillon d'Intervention Rapide'', or BIR) is an elite military force and an army combat unit of the Cameroonian Armed Forces. The unit is supported by the United States, reports directly to the president of Cameroon, and has played a large part in the Cameroonian and regional war against Boko Haram. The unit has also been accused of torturing and killing detainees at a number of its bases in northern Cameroon and in Nigeria. Structure and activities The BIR was created in 2001 in Cameroon's struggle against armed groups and gangs on its borders. The BIR is better equipped, trained and paid than ordinary units in Cameroon's army. The unit is led by a retired Israeli officer and reports directly to Cameroon's president, instead of to the ministry of defense. Cameroonian Armed Forces
The Cameroon Armed Forces (french: Forces armées camerounaises (FAC)) are the military of the Republic of Cameroon. The armed forces number 40,000 personnel in ground, air, and naval forces. There are approximately 40,000 troops in the army across three military regions. Approximately 1,300 troops are part of the Cameroonian Navy, which is headquartered at Douala. Under 600 troops are part of the Air Force. Michael Hoza
Michael Stephen Hoza (born 1957 in Goldsboro, North Carolina) is an American diplomat. From 2014 to 2017 Hoza served as the United States Ambassador to Cameroon. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Georgetown University in 1979. After working with the Washington Post Company in Washington, D.C., for six years Hoza joined the Foreign Service. Consular career After joining the State Department in 1985, Hoza was first posted to the U.S. embassy in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire as a Regional Budget and Fiscal Officer. In 1987, he was moved to the U.S. consulate in the French West Indies, where he stayed for two years before being moved to Maputo, Mozambique to be an Administrative Officer. Boko Haram Insurgency
The Boko Haram insurgency began in July 2009, when the militant Islamist and jihadist rebel group Boko Haram started an armed rebellion against the government of Nigeria. The conflict is taking place within the context of long-standing issues of religious violence between Nigeria's Muslim and Christian communities, and the insurgents' ultimate aim is to establish an Islamic state in the region. Boko Haram's initial uprising failed, and its leader Mohammed Yusuf was killed by the Nigerian government. The Southwest Region or South-West Region () is a region in Cameroon. Its capital is Buea. , its population was 1,553,320. Kanuri People
