Raoul Björkenheim
Raoul Melvin Björkenheim (born February 11, 1956) is an American jazz guitarist from Los Angeles. His mother is Finnish-American actress Taina Elg.''Finlands ridderskaps och adels kalender 1992'', pp. 92–93. Esbo 1991. In his teens he moved to Finland. He attended the Helsinki Conservatory and the Berklee School of Music. His professional career began in the 1980s with Finnish jazz drummer Edward Vesala. After recording three albums with Vesla, he formed Krakatau. During the 1990s he reduced the band to a trio. He recorded an album with guitarist Nicky Skopelitis that was produced by Bill Laswell. Björkenheim has composed for the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, and the UMO Jazz Orchestra and worked as a soloist with the Avanti! Moers Festival
The Moers Festival is an annual international music festival in Moers, Germany. The festival has changed from concentrating on free jazz to including world and pop music, though it still invites many avant-garde jazz musicians. Performers at Moers include Lester Bowie, Fred Frith, Jan Garbarek, Herbie Hancock, Abdullah Ibrahim, David Murray, Sun Ra, Archie Shepp, and Cecil Taylor. Paal Nilssen-Love
Paal Nilssen-Love (born 24 December 1974) is a Norwegian drummer and composer in the jazz, free jazz and free improvisation genres. (in Norwegian) Early life Nilssen-Love was born in Molde, Norway. His parents ran a jazz club in Stavanger, and he learned to play drums on the kit owned by his father. As a teenager, he played with free-jazz reedsman Frode Gjerstad, which was the start of a long musical relationship. He did musical studies at ''Sund folkehøgskole'' 1993-94. In 1994, during studies on the Jazz program at the Trondheim Musikkonservatorium (1994–96), he formed the band Element which musically became a platform for several other groups with bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and pianist Håvard Wiik and led to collaborations with Iain Ballamy and Chris Potter. Nilssen-Love also did a little composing in the mid-1990s. Kvalda
Kvalda is a Finnish jazz quartet. The members of the band are singer Aili Ikonen, pianist Antti Kujanpää, double bass player Jori Huhtala and drummer Hanne Pulli. Kvalda's music has been described as "Nordic", and is influenced by traditional music. Kvalda was formed in Jyväskylä in the autumn of 2002 on Kujanpää's initiative. At that time, all the band's members were studying at the conservatory of Jyväskylä College. Another common factor for them was Jazz Bar (a.k.a. Poppari), a music club in Jyväskylä: Ikonen, Huhtala and Pulli were active participants in children's jam sessions arranged in Jazz Bar. The club later designated Kujanpää, Pulli and Ikonen as the musicians of the year and Huhtala as the newcomer of the year. Kvalda's debut album ''Kvalda'' was published at Jyväskylä Summer Jazz festival on June 12, 2004. The album was recorded in Jyväskylä College's studio in May 2003 and March 2004. Kalle Kalima
Kalle Kalima (born 29 December 1973 in Helsinki, Finland) is a Finnish jazz guitarist and improvisational musician. Biography Kalima got piano lessons as a child for five years before switching to the guitar at age 11. He studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki with Raoul Björkenheim and at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin with John Schröder. He then worked with such musicians as trumpeter Tomasz Stańko, saxophonist Juhani Aaltonen, pianist Heikki Sarmanto, bassist Sirone, Teppo Hauta-Aho, Carlos Bica and Ed Schuller, guitarist Marc Ducret, composer Simon Stockhausen, singer Linda Sharrock and the Finnish musician Jimi Tenor. Musical projects Kalima leads several of his own bands like the trio ''Klima Kalima'' (with bassist Oliver Potratz and drummer Oliver Steidle) is rooted in modern jazz and has recorded three albums, mostly with compositions by Kalima.
