Kalle Kalima
Kalle Kalima (born 29 December 1973 in Helsinki, Finland) is a Finnish jazz guitarist and improvisational musician. Biography Kalima got piano lessons as a child for five years before switching to the guitar at age 11. He studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki with Raoul Björkenheim and at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin with John Schröder. He then worked with such musicians as trumpeter Tomasz Stańko, saxophonist Juhani Aaltonen, pianist Heikki Sarmanto, bassist Sirone, Teppo Hauta-Aho, Carlos Bica and Ed Schuller, guitarist Marc Ducret, composer Simon Stockhausen, singer Linda Sharrock and the Finnish musician Jimi Tenor. Musical projects Kalima leads several of his own bands like the trio ''Klima Kalima'' (with bassist Oliver Potratz and drummer Oliver Steidle) is rooted in modern jazz and has recorded three albums, mostly with compositions by Kalima. Jimi Tenor
Jimi Tenor (born Lassi O. T. Lehto, 1965) is a Finnish musician. His artist name is a combination of the first name of his youth idol Jimmy Osmond and the tenor saxophone. His band Jimi Tenor & His Shamans released its first album in 1988, whilst Tenor's first solo album appeared in 1994. "Take Me Baby" became his first hit in 1994. He has released albums on Sähkö Recordings, Warp Records and Kitty-Yo record labels. Tenor has performed several times with the avant-garde big band Flat Earth Society. In 1997, he contributed a cover of "Down in the Park" to on the Gary Numan tribute album Random''. In 2009, he covered an Elektroids song for the ''Warp20 (Recreated)'' compilation album, as well as having his song "Paint the Stars" covered by Hudson Mohawke. Tenor was born in Lahti, Finland. Wadada Leo Smith
Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith (born December 18, 1941) is an American trumpeter and composer, working primarily in the fields of avant-garde jazz and free improvisation. He was one of three finalists for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Music for ''Ten Freedom Summers'', released on May 22, 2012. Biography Smith was born in Leland, Mississippi, United States. He started out playing drums, mellophone, and French horn before he settled on the trumpet. He played in various R&B groups and, by 1967, became a member of the AACM and co-founded the Creative Construction Company, a trio with Leroy Jenkins and Anthony Braxton. In 1971, Smith formed his own label, Kabell. He also formed another band, the New Dalta Ahkri, with members including Henry Threadgill, Anthony Davis and Oliver Lake. In the 1970s, Smith studied ethnomusicology at Wesleyan University. He played again with Anthony Braxton, as well as recording with Derek Bailey's Company. Henrik Otto Donner
Henrik Otto Donner (16 November 1939 – 26 June 2013) was a Finnish composer, musician and all-round music personality. His musical styles varied from pop and rock music to jazz, electronic music and contemporary classical music. Donner's personal instrument was trumpet. He was a member of the famous Finland Swedish Donner family. Donner was one of the pioneers of Finnish avant-garde and experimental music as well as an important figure in Finnish left-wing "song movement" of the 1960s and 1970s. He studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and later in Vienna as a student of György Ligeti. In 1966 Donner was one of the founders of record label Love Records which was a pioneering label in Finnish rock music. Eric Schaefer, Ph.D., (born 1959) is a professor and film historian. He is an associate professor at Emerson College and interim chair of the visual and media arts department. Mikko Aleksi Innanen (born 28 February 1978 in Lapinjärvi, Finland), is a Finnish saxophonist and composer. Innanen graduated in 2003 from the jazz department of Sibelius Academy, the only university level music academy in Finland. Innanen spent one year of his studies in Copenhagen, Denmark, at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory. Knut Reiersrud
Knut Reiersrud (born 12 February 1961) is a Norwegian blues guitarist. His work also incorporates elements of Norwegian traditional music and African music. Reiersrud has recorded and played with David Lindley, the Blind Boys Of Alabama, Rickie Lee Jones, Nina Hagen and Swedish blues musician Sven Zetterberg. He has also numerous collaborations with Middle East performers like Rim Banna and Mahsa Vahdat. He lives in Oslo. He has collaborated extensively with the Norwegian organist Iver Kleive. He is lead guitarist and one of the original members of Cloudberry Cream.
