Rangeley is a town in Franklin County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,222 at the 2020 census. Rangeley is the center of the Rangeley Lakes Region, a resort area. The town includes the villages of Rangeley and Oquossoc, as well as the communities of Mooselookmeguntic, Bald Mountain, Mountainview, and South Rangeley. History It is named after an Englishman, Squire James Rangeley, who inherited a tract bought from Massachusetts in 1796 by his father. He arrived in 1825 to establish an estate based on the English system of landlord and tenants, also giving extensive land to settlers. He built a sawmill, a gristmill, a two-story mansion, and a ten-mile (16 km) road to connect his property with the rest of the world. Rangeley resided here for 15 years, then sold the property and moved to Portland. Farms produced hay, wheat, oats, barley and potatoes, with cattle grazing the hills. Charles Stuart Rangeley-Wilson is an author of three works of non-fiction: ''Somewhere Else'' (2004) ''The Accidental Angler'' (2006) and ''Silt Road'' (2013). Walter Rangeley
Walter Rangeley (14 December 1903 – 16 March 1982) was an English athlete who competed mainly in the sprints. He was born in Salford and died in Glyndŵr. Rangeley competed for Great Britain in the 1924 Summer Olympics held in Paris, France in the 4×100 metre relay where he won the silver medal with his teammates Harold Abrahams, Wilfred Nichol and Lancelot Royle. In the 100 metres event he was eliminated in the quarter-finals. At the following Games in 1928 held in Amsterdam Rangeley won a silver medal in the 200 metres. He also joined with a new relay team consisting of teammates Cyril Gill, Edward Smouha and Jack London which won the bronze medal in the 4×100 metres competition. In the 100 metres event he was eliminated in the quarter-finals again. After not participating in the 1932 Games his final Olympic appearance was in 1936 when he was a member of the British relay team which was eliminated in the first round of the 4×100 metre relay contest.
