Randomized Block Design
In the statistical theory of the design of experiments, blocking is the arranging of experimental units in groups (blocks) that are similar to one another. Blocking can be used to tackle the problem of pseudoreplication. Use Blocking reduces unexplained variability. Its principle lies in the fact that variability which cannot be overcome (e.g. needing two batches of raw material to produce 1 container of a chemical) is confounded or aliased with a(n) (higher/highest order) interaction to eliminate its influence on the end product. Holger Rootzén
Holger Rootzén (born 25 March 1945) is a Swedish mathematical statistician. He is Professor in Mathematical Statistics at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Chalmers University of Technology since 1993. Education and career Rootzén obtained his Ph.D. in 1974 with the thesis ''On sequences of random variables which are mixing in the sense of Renyi''. He has earlier been professor at Lund University and lecturer at University of Copenhagen. Rootzén is member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. He also serves as adjunct member on the Price Committee for the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. Dependent and independent variables are variables in mathematical modeling, statistical modeling and experimental sciences. Dependent variables receive this name because, in an experiment, their values are studied under the supposition or demand that they depend, by some law or rule (e.g., by a mathematical function), on the values of other variables. Independent variables, in turn, are not seen as depending on any other variable in the scope of the experiment in question. In statistics, a paired difference test is a type of location test that is used when comparing two sets of measurements to assess whether their expected value, population means differ. A paired difference test uses additional information about the sample (statistics), sample that is not present in an ordinary unpaired testing situation, either to increase the statistical power, or to reduce the effects of confounders. Optimal Design
In the design of experiments, optimal designs (or optimum designs) are a class of experimental designs that are optimal with respect to some statistical criterion. The creation of this field of statistics has been credited to Danish statistician Kirstine Smith. In the design of experiments for estimating statistical models, optimal designs allow parameters to be estimated without bias and with minimum variance. A non-optimal design requires a greater number of experimental runs to estimate the parameters with the same precision as an optimal design. In practical terms, optimal experiments can reduce the costs of experimentation. In combinatorics, two Latin squares of the same size (''order'') are said to be ''orthogonal'' if when superimposed the ordered paired entries in the positions are all distinct. A set of Latin squares, all of the same order, all pairs of which are orthogonal is called a set of mutually orthogonal Latin squares. This concept of orthogonality in combinatorics is strongly related to the concept of blocking in statistics, which ensures that independent variables are truly independent with no hidden confounding correlations.
