Randolph Strickland
Randolph Strickland (February 4, 1823 – May 5, 1880) was a politician from the U.S. state of Michigan. Strickland was born in Dansville, Livingston County, New York, Dansville, New York and attended the common schools. He moved to Michigan in 1844 and taught school in Ingham County, Michigan, Ingham County. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1849 and commenced practice in DeWitt, Michigan. He moved to St. Johns, Michigan, St. John's and continued the practice of law. He was elected prosecuting attorney for Clinton County, Michigan, Clinton County in 1852, 1854, 1856, 1858, and 1862. Strickland served as a member of the Michigan Senate from the Michigan's 22nd Senate district, 22nd district in 1861 and 1862 and provost marshal of the sixth congressional district from 1863 to 1865. 1856 Republican National Convention
The 1856 Republican National Convention was a presidential nominating convention that met from June 17 to June 19 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was the first national nominating convention of the Republican Party, which had been founded two years before, and was held to nominate the party's candidates for president and vice president in the 1856 election. The convention selected former Senator John C. Frémont of California for president and former Senator William L. Dayton of New Jersey for vice president. The convention also appointed the members of the newly-established Republican National Committee. Martha Strickland Clark
Martha Helen Strickland Clark (March 25, 1853 – June 17, 1935) was an American lawyer who was the first woman to practice law in Detroit, and the first woman to argue before the Michigan Supreme Court. Biography Clark was born on March 25, 1853, in St. Johns, Michigan, to parents Randolph Strickland and Mary S. Strickland. Her father represented Michigan's 6th congressional district from March 4, 1869 to March 3, 1871 in Congress. During that time, Martha Clark would serve as his private secretary, and spent a year in Utah with Obediah Strickland, a federal judge. At twenty, she studied law with her father for a short time before entering the University of Michigan Law School, where she was the only woman student, and elected secretary of the Webster Club, a popular literary club. Michigan's 6th congressional district is a United States congressional district in southeast Michigan. In 2022, the district was redrawn to be centered around Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County, as well as western and southern Wayne County, small part of southwestern Oakland County, and the city of Milan in Monroe County. In previous redistrictings, the 6th district consisted of all of Berrien, Cass, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, and Van Buren, counties, and includes most of Allegan county. The district is currently represented by Democrat Debbie Dingell, who previously represented the old 12th district.
