Ralph Linwood Perkins Sr. (1888-1967) was an American farmer and politician from Maine. Perkins, a Republican, served in the Maine House of Representatives from 1919–20 and the Maine Senate from 1927-28. In June 1928, Ku Klux Klan Grand Dragon DeForest H. Perkins of Portland resigned following the defeat of Klan-backed candidates Ralph Owen Brewster for U.S. Senate and John Smith for governor. Maine () is a state in the New England and Northeastern regions of the United States. The Maine Republican Party is an affiliate of the United States Republican Party in Maine. It was founded in Strong, Maine, on August 7, 1854. The party currently does not control the governor's office or either chamber of the Maine Legislature, nor either of Maine's two U.S. House seats and only controls one of the state's U.S. Senate seats. Party history The Republican Party formed in Maine in 1854 due to Prohibition and the abolitionist movement. The Maine House of Representatives is the lower house of the Maine Legislature. The House consists of 151 voting members and three nonvoting members. The voting members represent an equal number of districts across the state and are elected via plurality voting. The nonvoting members represent three of Maine's Native American tribes, though two tribes have declined to send representatives. Each voting member of the House represents around 9,000 citizens of the state. The Senate currently consists of 35 members representing an equal number of districts across the state, though the Maine Constitution allows for "an odd number of Senators, not less than 31 nor more than 35". Ralph Owen Brewster
Ralph Owen Brewster (February 22, 1888 – December 25, 1961) was an American politician from Maine. Brewster, a Republican, served as the 54th Governor of Maine from 1925 to 1929, in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1935 to 1941 and in the U.S. Senate from 1941 to 1952. Brewster was a close confidant of Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin and an antagonist of Howard Hughes. He was defeated by Frederick G. Payne, whose campaign was heavily funded by Hughes, in the 1952 Republican primary. John G. Smith (born June 9, 1874) was an American politician from Maine. Smith was elected mayor of Saco, Maine in 1924 during the peak of electoral success for the Ku Klux Klan in Maine politics. He was appointed Commissioner of Banking by Governor Owen Brewster in 1927. He, along with Governor Owen Brewster, State Senator Hodgdon Buzzell were among the most prominent of the state's politicians who were supported by the Klan. The Townsend Plan was an American scheme in 1933–1936 during the Great Depression in the United States to give every person over age 60 a monthly cash payment of $200. It was devised by Francis Townsend, an elderly California physician. The plan was promoted by real estate salesman Robert Clements, who made Townsend only a figurehead. It expanded to thousands of clubs in many states and demonstrated a nationwide demand for old-age pensions. The New Deal of President Franklin D. Roosevelt responded with a much more complex system of Social Security that was enacted in 1935 and that achieved many of the same goals on a more frugal basis. Organization Clements set up a for-profit organization, Old Age Revolving Pensions, Ltd., that published pamphlets and newsletters, and hired organizers to set up local clubs.
