Ralph Leighton
Ralph Leighton (; born 1949) is an American biographer, film producer, and friend of the late physicist Richard Feynman. He recorded Feynman relating stories of his life. Leighton has released some of the recordings as ''The Feynman Tapes''. These interviews (available as The Feynman Tapes on audio) became the basis for the books ''Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!'' and '' What Do You Care What Other People Think?'', which were later combined into the hardcover anniversary edition ''Classic Feynman: All the Adventures of a Curious Character''. Leighton is an amateur drummer and founder of the group Friends of Tuva. In 1990 he wrote '' Tuva or Bust! Richard Feynman's Last Journey.'' He is credited as associate producer and originator of the concept for the Academy-Award–nominated documentary film ''Genghis Blues'' (2000), which came about through the nexus provided by Friends of Tuva. A film producer is a person who oversees film production. Either employed by a production company or working independently, producers plan and coordinate various aspects of film production, such as selecting the script, coordinating writing, directing, editing, and arranging financing. The producer is responsible for finding and selecting promising material for development. Richard Feynman
Richard Phillips Feynman (; May 11, 1918 – February 15, 1988) was an American theoretical physicist, known for his work in the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics, the theory of quantum electrodynamics, the physics of the superfluidity of supercooled liquid helium, as well as his work in particle physics for which he proposed the parton model. For contributions to the development of quantum electrodynamics, Feynman received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965 jointly with Julian Schwinger and Shin'ichirō Tomonaga. Feynman developed a widely used pictorial representation scheme for the mathematical expressions describing the behavior of subatomic particles, which later became known as Feynman diagrams. Tuva Or Bust!
''Tuva or Bust!'' (1991) is a book by Ralph Leighton about the author and his friend Richard Feynman's attempt to travel to Tuva. The introduction explains how Feynman challenged Leighton, at the time a high school math teacher, "Whatever happened to Tannu Tuva?" Since Feynman had a reputation as a prankster, Leighton assumed it was made up. But the country existed, and the pair became fascinated with this hard-to-reach destination in the middle of Asia, which had become a republic in the Soviet Union. They made it a goal to travel there, which, for Americans in the late 1970s and early 1980s, was extremely difficult. In many ways, the attempt to travel to Tuva is an allegory for Feynman's perpetual curiosity to discover new things, and how he inspired his friends, admirers and protégés to do the same.
