Custer County is a rural mountain county in the center of the U.S. state of Idaho. As of the 2020 census, the population was 4,275. The county seat is Challis. Established in 1881, the county was named for the General Custer Mine, where gold was discovered five years earlier. Custer County relies on ranching, mining, and tourism as its main resources. Glacial Lake
A glacial lake is a body of water with origins from glacier activity. They are formed when a glacier erodes the land and then melts, filling the depression created by the glacier. Formation Near the end of the last glacial period, roughly 10,000 years ago, glaciers began to retreat. A retreating glacier often left behind large deposits of ice in hollows between drumlins or hills. As the ice age ended, these melted to create lakes. This is apparent in the Lake District in Northwestern England where post-glacial sediments are normally between 4 and 6 metres deep. These lakes are often surrounded by drumlins, along with other evidence of the glacier such as moraines, eskers and erosional features such as striations and chatter marks. Champion Creek (Idaho)
Champion Creek is a ghost town located in the West Kootenay region of British Columbia. It is a former Doukhobor settlement. The town is near Champion Creek on the east side of Columbia River, between Trail and Castlegar. History A 920-acre area at the confluence of Champion Creek and the Columbia River was purchased in 1912 by Doukhobors from Saskatchewan. They named the area ''Blagondatnoe'' and established five unnamed communal villages, which included barns, a blacksmith shop, granaries, a planer mill, and a saw mill. They cleared forests and planted gardens and orchards. The community went into decline in 1937 following the demise of the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood. By 1963, the villages had been abandoned and the land sold. Alpine Lake
Alpine lakes are classified as lakes at high altitudes in mountainous zones, usually near or above the tree line, with extended periods of ice cover. These lakes are commonly formed from glacial activity (either current or in the past) but can also be formed from geological processes such as volcanic activity or landslides. Many alpine lakes that are fed from glacial melt have the characteristic bright turquoise or green color as a result of glacial flour, suspended minerals derived from a glacier scouring the bedrock. When active glaciers are not supplying water to the lake, such as a majority of alpine lakes of the Rocky Mountains in the U.S., the lakes may still be bright blue due to the lack of algae growth resulting from cold temperatures, lack of nutrient run-off from surrounding land, and lack of sediment input. White Cloud Mountains
The White Cloud Mountains are part of the Rocky Mountains of the western United States, located in central Idaho, southeast of Stanley in Custer County. The range is located within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) and partially within the Cecil D. Andrus–White Clouds Wilderness. The White Cloud Mountains are located on National Forest land, with numerous trails in the area. Camping is permitted anywhere on the national forest land and there are no fees to access the area. Primary access to the area is via State Highway 75, the ''Salmon River Scenic Byway,'' which accompanies the main Salmon River as it descends along the range's western and northern perimeter. Sawtooth National Recreation Area
The Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) is a national recreation area in central Idaho, United States that is managed as part of Sawtooth National Forest. The recreation area, established on August 22, 1972, is managed by the U.S. Forest Service, and includes the Sawtooth, Hemingway–Boulders, and Cecil D. Andrus–White Clouds wilderness areas. Sawtooth National Forest is a United States National Forest, National Forest that covers 2,110,408 acres (854,052 ha) in the U.S. states of Idaho (~96 percent) and Utah (~4 percent). Horton Peak
Horton Peak at above sea level is a peak in the White Cloud Mountains of Idaho. The peak is located in Sawtooth National Recreation Area in Custer County. Horton Peak rises above the southeastern end of the Sawtooth Valley west of the Sawtooth Range and Idaho State Highway 75. A trail goes to the summit from the end of forest road 459 in the Sawtooth Valley. Horton Peak was named after forest ranger William H. Horton (1867–1935), who is memorialized at the Pole Creek Ranger Station, located about two miles southeast of Horton Peak.
