Railways In Adelaide
The rail network in Adelaide, South Australia, consists of four lines (six including two short spurs) and 89 stations, totalling 132 km. It is operated by Keolis Downer under contract from the Government of South Australia, and is part of the citywide Adelaide Metro public transport system. All lines around Adelaide were originally broad gauge. The main interstate lines out of Adelaide towards Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Darwin have been progressively converted to , but the suburban system and a few freight-only branch lines to the north remain broad gauge. Operators Rail services around Adelaide are provided by a mixture of private and government-owned organisations. The Department for Infrastructure & Transport (DIT) owns the suburban passenger rail network, comprising six lines originating from Adelaide railway station on North Terrace in the CBD. Adelaide Metro A-City 4000 Class
The Adelaide Metro A-City 4000 Class is a class of electric multiple unit trains built by Bombardier Transportation (later Alstom) in Dandenong, Victoria for the electrified Adelaide Metro rail network. They are currently the only class of operational electric trains in South Australia. History In March 2011, Bombardier Transportation was awarded a contract to build 22 three-carriage trains for the Railways in Adelaide, Adelaide rail network, that was in the process of being electrified. The design uses a similar shell to that of the V/Line VLocity diesel multiple unit trains, introduced in 2004. In railway engineering, "gauge" is the transverse distance between the inner surfaces of the heads of two rails, which for the vast majority of railway lines is the number of rails in place. However, it is sometimes necessary for track to carry railway vehicles with wheels matched to two different gauges. Such track is described as dual gauge – achieved either by addition of a third rail, if it will fit, or by two additional rails. Dual-gauge tracks are more expensive to configure with signals and sidings, and to maintain, than two separate single-gauge tracks. It is therefore usual to build dual-gauge or other multi-gauge tracks only when necessitated by lack of space or when tracks of two different gauges meet in marshalling yards or passenger stations. Adelaide Railway Station
Adelaide Railway Station is the central terminus of the Adelaide Metro railway system. All lines approach the station from the west, and it is a terminal station with no through lines, with most of the traffic on the metropolitan network either departing or terminating here. It has nine platforms, all using broad gauge track. It is located on the north side of North Terrace, west of Parliament House. The Adelaide Casino occupies part of the building that is no longer required for railway use.
