Rafiatou Karimou
Rafiatou Karimou (2 May 1946 – 4 January 2018) was a Beninese politician and teacher by profession. Karimou was the first female to be appointed to the position of a minister in her country. Biography Rafiatou Karimou was born in 1946 in Sakété, in the south of present-day Benin, then Colony of Dahomey. She began to campaign in her youth in the General Union of Pupils and Students of Dahomey (UGEED) before engaging in politics. In 1975, she was the first woman to be appointed district chief in Benin and in 1989, she became the first woman minister in her country after she was appointed Minister of Public Health by President Mathieu Kérékou. She held this position until 1990. She was appointed minister again from 2003 to 2006, this time to head the portfolio of Minister of Primary and Secondary Education. Mathieu Kérékou
Mathieu Kérékou (; 2 September 1933 – 14 October 2015) was a Beninese politician who served as President of Benin from 1972 to 1991 and again from 1996 to 2006. After seizing power in a military coup, he ruled the country for 19 years, for most of that time under an officially Marxist–Leninist ideology, before he was stripped of his powers by the National Conference of 1990. He was defeated in the 1991 presidential election but was returned to the presidency in the 1996 election and controversially re-elected in 2001. Bassila
Bassila is a town, arrondissement, and commune located in the Donga Department of Benin. The commune covers an area of 120 square kilometres and as of 2013 had a population of 130,770 people. The RNIE 3 highway of Benin passes through the town of Bassila and the commune. The main ethnic groups in the commune are in the order of significance: Yoruba/Nagot who are the native dwellers, as well as smaller migrant communities of Anii and Tem people otherwise known as 'Kotokoli'. The Nagots historically migrated from Nigeria during a westward Yoruba expansion. The town of Bassila is largely Anii, and is the largest Anii-speaking village. Given that Bassila is located in proximity to the border with Togo, a significant proportion of the population are of Togolese origin (Anii and Kotokoli migrants). Véronique Ahoyo
Véronique Ahoyo (June 29, 1939 - December 14, 2008) was a Beninese politician, diplomat, and civil administrator. She notably served as Beninese ambassador to Canada. Biography Born in Cotonou, Ahoyo received training in civil administration in Paris and Abidjan, and in social services in Toulouse. Returning to Benin, she took a post as deputy director of social affairs in 1967. In 1972, she graduated with a Master in Applied Social Sciences from the University of Abidjan in Côte d'Ivoire. She was promoted to director of social affairs in 1975. She left the role in 1990; in March of that year she was named Minister of Labor and Social Affairs. Ahoyo also served as the Beninese ambassador to Canada, having been nominated to the position in 1996.
