Radium, Colorado
Radium, elevation , is a small rural unincorporated community in southwestern Grand County, Colorado, United States. The community sits in the mountains along an isolated stretch of Colorado River downstream from Gore Canyon and southwest of Kremmling. The mainline of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad (now the Union Pacific Railroad) runs past the community, which is accessible by dirt and gravel roads only. The community of Radium consists of a cluster of houses on the north side of a bridge on the Colorado. The primary local industry is livestock ranching. The community is named for the element radium, which was formerly mined in Colorado in the early 20th century. The Radium Recreation Site, part of the Upper Colorado River Special Recreation Management Area managed by the Bureau of Land Management, is on the south bank of the Colorado River across from the community. Radium is a chemical element with the symbol Ra and atomic number 88. It is the sixth element in group 2 of the periodic table, also known as the alkaline earth metals. Pure radium is silvery-white, but it readily reacts with nitrogen (rather than oxygen) upon exposure to air, forming a black surface layer of radium nitride (Ra3N2). All isotopes of radium are radioactive, the most stable isotope being radium-226 with a half-life of 1600 years. Gore Canyon
Gore Canyon, elevation , is a short isolated canyon on the upper Colorado River in southwestern Grand County, Colorado in the United States. Steep and rugged, the approximately 3 mile (5 km) long gorge was carved by the river as it passed the northern end of the Gore Range southwest of Kremmling. The Colorado descends from approximately to approximately over the length of the canyon. The steep walls ascend approximately on either side. The canyon effectively marks the southwestern end of the Middle Park basin in north central Colorado. Kremmling, Colorado
The Town of Kremmling is a Statutory Town in Grand County, Colorado, United States. The town population was 1444 at the 2010 United States Census. The town sits along the upper Colorado River in the lower arid section of Middle Park between Byers Canyon and Gore Canyon. The town was founded in 1881 during the Colorado Silver Boom days, but the lack of mineral resources in the nearby mountains made the town grow very slowly in the early days. History The settlement started with only a general store, run by a man named Rudolph "Kare" Kremmling, built on the north side of Muddy Creek. In 1881, two brothers, Aaron and John Kinsey, made part of their ranch into a town and called it Kinsey City. Kare moved his store across the river to the new site and soon people were calling this place Kremmling. Radium Hot Springs (Colorado)
Radium Hot Springs is a thermal mineral spring near the small town of Radium, Colorado, located halfway between Kremmling and State Bridge, in Grand County, Colorado. Description The springs emerge from several sources near the edge of the Colorado River. A large primitive soaking pool with a sandy bottom has been constructed against a sheer rock cliff. The rock-lined soaking pool is reached by way of climbing down a fifty foot long rock chimney via footholds and handholds in the rock. The pool is 2 feet deep and approximately 10 by 18 feet. It fits approximately 10 to 20 people. It is dangerous to attempt to jump from the soaking pool on the rock cliff to the river below, and serious injuries could be incurred.
