Rachid Benhadj
Mohamed Rachid Benhadj ( ar, رشيد بن حاج, born 12 July 1949) is an Algerian film director and screenwriter. Life and career Born in Algiers, Benhadj studied architecture and cinema at the University of Paris. He made his professional debut working for the Radiodiffusion Télévision Algérienne as a documentarist. His feature film debut ''Louss'' (aka ''Desert Rose'', 1989) received wide critical acclaim. In the 1990s he decided to settle permanently in Italy. Starting from his second film ''Touchia'' his films become more socially and politically committed. He is also a painter. Algiers ( ; ar, الجزائر, al-Jazāʾir; ber, Dzayer, script=Latn; french: Alger, ) is the capital and largest city of Algeria. ''Mirka'' is a 2000 drama film starring Vanessa Redgrave and Gérard Depardieu. The international co-production was written and directed by Algerian-born filmmaker Rachid Benhadj. Although countries are unnamed, several publications make reference to the film as a document of Bosnian Genocide. It was released in Italy on 10 March 2000 and received its international premiere at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival on 21 November 2005. Plot Mirka is searching for his mother in an unidentified Balkan nation, he is befriended by Strix (Depardieu) who promises to help.
