The R580 is a Regional Route in Mpumalanga, South Africa that connects the R50 north of Leandra with Secunda and Evander. Route The R580 begins at a junction with the R50 approximately 15 kilometres north of Leandra (28 kilometres south-east of Delmas). It runs eastwards for 21 kilometres to reach a junction just before Matla Power Station, where it turns to the south. It heads for 8 kilometres to reach a junction wifh the R547. It continues southwards for 12 kilometres to reach the Leven Station interchange, where it meets the eastern terminus of the R29 and crosses the N17 Highway. It continues south for 4 kilometres to reach a junction just north-west of the industrial town of Secunda (west of Trichardt), where it turns to the west. Secunda (from Latin: second, secund, secundi meaning second/following) is a town built amidst the coalfields of the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. It was named for being the second Sasol extraction refinery producing oil from coal, after Sasolburg, some to the west. History Early history During 1974, Sasol (Transvaal) Townships Limited, a subsidiary company of Sasol Limited, was instructed to establish and develop Secunda. After the site for the Sasol complex had been identified, it had to be decided whether or not to combine the existing towns of Evander and Trichardt. The huge burden that extensions of this nature would have had on the financial and administrative resources of the established communities as well as the tempo at which such development should proceed was decisive and resulted in the decision to develop Trichardt and Secunda to be one town, named Secunda. Evander, Mpumalanga
Evander is a town in Mpumalanga, South Africa. It is approximately 8 km north west of Secunda. History The town was founded in 1955 when the Union Corporation started its mining activities and was originally part of the Bethal district (named after a town 36 km to the east). The town is named after Evelyn Anderson, the wife of Peter Maltitz Anderson, one of the directors of the corporation. Economy Gold mining The Union Corporation acquired options in the Kinross area, 64 km east of Springs. Mining started in 1955 though their subsidiary Winkelhaak Mines Ltd. The Evander mine is currently operating in its 9th shaft and employs around 3,300 people. These operations, now owned by Harmony Gold, mine the Kimberley Reef in the Evander Basin and produced over 16 000 kg of gold from 2008 to 2010. The R50 is a provincial route in South Africa that connects Pretoria with Standerton via Delmas and Leandra. Route Gauteng The R50 begins in Pretoria, Tshwane (Administrative Capital of South Africa) near the suburbs of Erasmusrand and Waterkloof Ridge, at an intersection with the N1 Danie Joubert Freeway ( Pretoria Eastern Bypass). North of the freeway, it is designated as the M9 Metropolitan Route and named Rigel Avenue. It begins as Delmas Road and heads south-east, passing through Erasmuskloof and meeting the M10 Metropolitan Route (Solomon Mahlangu Drive) before passing in-between Wingate Park and Elardus Park and becoming the eastern border of the Rietvlei Nature Reserve. Delmas, Mpumalanga
Delmas is a small maize farming town situated east of Johannesburg in Mpumalanga, South Africa. The town is located some 19 km north-east of Springs and 73 km south-east of Pretoria. History The town was laid out in 1907 on the farm ''Witklip'' (Afrikaans for ''White Stone'') and has been administered by a town council since 1965. The name was given by the Frenchman Frank Campbell Dumat, former owner of Witklip, after his grandfather's farm in France. He originally laid out the town with 192 residential stands, 48 4 ha small holdings and 138 ha of commonage but by 1909 the governments added a further 5,500 ha to the town. The R547 is a Regional Route in South Africa. Route Its northern terminus is an intersection with the R555 just south-west of Witbank, Mpumalanga. It leaves in a south-easterly direction, going over the N12 (without intersecting it), through Coalville, to a four-way intersection. The road heading south-east becomes signed the R544, and the road to the south-west the R547. From that intersection the R547 passes through Kriel and here meets the R545 at a staggered intersection. Continuing south-west, it intersects with the northern terminus of the R580 before reaching Kinross. Here it crosses the R29, thereafter being cosigned briefly with the R546. The R29 is a provincial route in South Africa that connects Johannesburg with Leandra and Kinross via Germiston, Boksburg, Benoni and Springs. For much of its route it is named Main Reef Road. The R29 used to end near the Golela border post, however the section from Evander to Ermelo is now part of the N17 (prior to construction of the N17 extension from Leandra to Evander, the N17 followed the alignment of R29 from Leandra; however, the extension of the N17 highway has resulted in the old section of the road being given to R29) and the section from Ermelo to the Golela border post just after Pongola is now part of the N2. From Springs to the R580 junction north of Evander, the R29 is parallel to the N17 Highway. The N17 is a national route in South Africa which runs from Johannesburg to Oshoek (Ngwenya) on the border with Eswatini. It passes through Springs, Bethal and Ermelo. Background The section of the N17 from Johannesburg to Springs is a dual carriageway and is a national toll route. It was the first urban toll road in Gauteng. It runs from the M11 Wemmer Pan Road in Johannesburg to Tonk Meter Road in Springs. The first part of the N17 used to be the old R77 which ran from the M46 Rand Airport Road to the R23. As part of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Scheme, two slip roads have been made linking the N17 to the N12.
