The R559 is a Regional Route in Gauteng, South Africa that connects Protea Glen with Carletonville via Randfontein. Route The R559 begins at a junction with the R558 Road in Protea Glen, Soweto, just north of the R558's intersection with the N12. It goes north-west for 17 kilometres to reach a junction with the R28 Road in the southern suburbs of Randfontein. From Randfontein, it turns to the south-west and goes for 22 kilometres, through Hillside, to reach a junction with Station Street. It becomes Station Street westwards and goes for 17 kilometres to enter the towns of Oberholzer and Carletonville. It reaches a junction with the R500 Road and bypasses Carletonville Mall. Randfontein
Randfontein is a gold mining town in the West Rand, Gauteng, South Africa, west of Johannesburg. With the Witwatersrand gold rush in full swing, mining financier JB Robinson bought the farm Randfontein and, in 1889, floated the Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company. The town was established in 1890 to serve the new mine and was administered by Krugersdorp until it became a municipality in 1929. Carletonville
Carletonville is a town in Gauteng and the seat of the Merafong City Local Municipality in the West Rand District Municipality in Gauteng, South Africa, just north of the richest gold-mining area in the world. At 3,749 m, Western Deep Levels holds the record for the world's deepest gold mine. History Developed by various mining companies from 1937 onwards, Carletonville was named after the long-serving mining director of Consolidated Gold Fields, Guy Carleton Jones, but was not officially incorporated until 1959. The N12 is a national route in South Africa which runs from George through Beaufort West, Kimberley, Klerksdorp and Johannesburg to eMalahleni. It is the only other National Route after the N1 Route that connects the Western Cape Province with the Gauteng Province. Prior to 1971, the N12 from Johannesburg to Three Sisters was known as the N13. Route Summary The road starts in George in the Western Cape and ends in eMalahleni in Mpumalanga. The road runs roughly from south to north, however, once it passes Kimberley in the Northern Cape, it gradually turns eastward. The R28 is a provincial route in Gauteng, South Africa that connects Krugersdorp with Vereeniging via Randfontein. The R28 used to connect with Pretoria, but that section of the road is now part of the N14. Route The R28 begins at a 4-way intersection with the N14 national route and the M47 Metropolitan Route north-east of Krugersdorp, Mogale City Local Municipality (at Cradlestone Mall; midway between Krugersdorp and Muldersdrift) (north-west of Roodepoort). The R28 used to proceed north-east as the route to Pretoria, but that section of the road was given to the N14 national route. The R500 is a Regional Route in South Africa that connects Magaliesburg with Parys via Carletonville and Fochville. Route The R500 begins in the North West, 10 kilometres west of Magaliesburg, at a junction with the R509, going southwards. After 2 kilometres, it crosses into Gauteng province. From the R509 junction, it goes southwards for 21 kilometres to reach a junction with the N14 National Route. It proceeds southwards for a further 3 kilometres to meet the western end of the R41 Route from Randfontein.
