Queensland Clarion Awards
The Queensland Clarion Awards, a union-administered award for journalists in the state of Queensland, Australia, started in 1995 and in May 2010 were re-branded from ''Queensland Media Awards''. The Clarion name was chosen to reflect the history of the Australian Journalists Association, one of the founding sections of the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance, the union representing Australian journalists, photographers, graphic artists, camera people, other media workers, musicians, actors and theatrical workers. The Clarion newspaper was an occasional paper published by the AJA during strikes. Entry to the annual awards, known informally as the Clarions, is open to all journalists, photographers, camera people, producers and artists in print, radio, television and online. The entry fee (A$230 in 2010) is waived for all members of the Alliance. Australian Journalists Association
The Australian Journalists Association (AJA) was an Australian trade union for journalists from 1910–1992. In 1913 the Australian Journalists' Association merged with the Australian Writers' and Artists' Union. This union had been formed in 1910, launched on 9 September of that year in the Sydney Trades Hall by Harold Mercer (1882–1952), also known as Harold St Aubyn, a prolific writer who was involved in the creation of 28 new unions in total. On 18 May 1992 it amalgamated with Actors' Equity and the Australian Theatrical and Amusement Employees' Association to create the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance. The Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance (MEAA), also sometimes referred to as the Alliance, is the Australian trade union and professional organisation which covers the media, entertainment, sports and arts industries. Its Musicians section consists of the SOMA (Symphony Orchestra Musician Association), TOMA (Theatre Orchestra Musicians Association), and, since December 2018, a new trade union for musicians, Musicians Australia (MA). Walkley Awards
The annual Walkley Awards are presented in Australia to recognise and reward excellence in journalism. They cover all media including print, television, documentary, radio, photographic and online media. The Gold Walkley is the highest prize and is chosen from all category winners. The awards are under the administration of the Walkley Foundation for Journalism. The Nikon Photography Prizes are also awarded by the Walkley Foundation at the awards ceremony, on behalf of Nikon. History The awards were instituted in five categories in 1956 by businessman Sir William Walkley, founder of Ampol.
