Qu'Appelle (N.W.T. Electoral District)
Qu'Appelle was a territorial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Northwest Territories, Canada. The riding was created as a single member electoral district by royal proclamation in 1883. In 1885 the riding was mandated to return two members to the Assembly. In 1888 the riding was split into North Qu'Appelle and South Qu'Appelle. Legislative Assembly Of The Northwest Territories
The Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly, or Legislative Council of the Northwest Territories (with Northwest hyphenated as North-West until 1906), is the legislature and the seat of government of Northwest Territories in Canada. It is a unicameral elected body that creates and amends law in the Northwest Territories. Permanently located in Yellowknife since 1993, the assembly was founded in 1870 and became active in 1872 with the first appointments from the Government of Canada. Until 2014, the assembly was officially defined under federal law as "Legislative Council". However, under Northwest Territories territorial law, it was defined as "Legislative Assembly". The Northwest Territories (abbreviated ''NT'' or ''NWT''; french: Territoires du Nord-Ouest, formerly ''North-Western Territory'' and ''North-West Territories'' and namely shortened as ''Northwest Territory'') is a federal territory of Canada. At a land area of approximately and a 2016 census population of 41,790, it is the second-largest and the most populous of the three territories in Northern Canada. South Qu'Appelle is a former provincial electoral division for the Legislative Assembly of the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. The district was created before the 1st Saskatchewan general election in 1905, and abolished before the 8th Saskatchewan general election in 1934 into Qu'Appelle-Wolseley and parts of Lumsden and Francis. It was the riding of former Premier of the North-West Territories and Saskatchewan Opposition leader Frederick Haultain. The Parliament of Canada (french: Parlement du Canada) is the federal legislature of Canada, seated at Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and is composed of three parts: the King, the Senate, and the House of Commons. Thomas Wesley Jackson
Thomas Wesley Jackson (6 June 1859 – 26 February 1934) was a Canadian politician. He served on the 1st Council of the Northwest Territories for Qu'Appelle from 1884 to 1886. Jackson was born in Downsview, Canada West, of Irish ancestry. He worked as a lawyer for a time in Chatham, Ontario, before moving to the Qu'Appelle Valley in 1880. At Qu'Appelle he would farm and get involved with the railway, eventually raising to the position of President of the Qu'Appelle and Wood Mountain Railway. He was also a justice of the peace. He was elected in 1883 to the Council of the North West Territories, and resigned his seat in September 1886, owing to his activities as president of the railway. William Dell Perley
William Dell Perley (February 6, 1838 – July 15, 1909) was a farmer and politician from western Canada. William had an extensive political career, he ran at least twice for the House of Commons of Canada in Sunbury electoral district as a Conservative being defeated both times in 1878 and 1882 in hotly contested and very close elections. He moved out west to the Regina area in the Northwest Territories and ran for the Legislative Assembly of Northwest Territories in the brand new Qu'Appelle electoral district in the 1885 Northwest Territories election and won the second of two seats in the district. He resigned his territorial seat two years prior to running in the 1887 Canadian federal election when he won one of the first Northwest Territories seats in the House of Commons of Canada. Robert Crawford (Canadian Politician)
Robert Crawford (11 August 1834 – 22 September 1897) was a Scottish-born Canadian politician. He served on the 1st Council of the Northwest Territories for Qu'Appelle from 1886 to 1888. Crawford was born in Port Glasgow, the son of Andrew Crawford. After receiving his education at Greenock, he came to Canada in 1849. He initially farmed at the Island of Montreal, but would later gain employment with the Hudson's Bay Company as a clerk in 1854. He earned a commission in 1867 as Chief Trader at Lindsay, Ontario, then worked as Chief Trader or Factor at Nipigon, Ontario, Red Rock, Ontario and Fort Chimo until 1877 when he retired. He moved to Brockville, Ontario where he lived until 1882, when he moved west to Indian Head, North West Territories. At Indian Head he operated a general store, Crawford & Robinson.
