He was son of James Sutherland, 2nd Lord Duffus and married Helen Duff, the eldest daughter of William Duff of Dipple, in 1702. Sutherland owned the estates of Moostowie, Aldroughty and Quarrelwood. In 1715, his estates were forfeited for his involvement in the 1715 Jacobite uprising and he died abroad in 1716, without issue. William Sutherland was a British officer during the American Revolution. Lieutenant Sutherland, of the 38th Regiment of Foot, marched with the British troops, under the command of General Gage, from Boston, Massachusetts on the night of 18 April 1775 led by Lieutenant-Colonel Francis Smith. The next morning, 19 April, Sutherland and another officer, Lieutenant Adair of the Marines, at the lead of the column about a mile from Lexington, were confronted by an armed colonist who aimed his musket at them, pulled the trigger, but the gun misfired (actually it flashed in the pan, i.e. the primer powder failed to ignite the charge in the musket). Convinced that the colonist meant to kill them, they returned to the column and informed Major John Pitcairn of the British Marines of the incident. William Sutherland (Northwest Territories Politician)
William Sutherland (September 3, 1854 – June 13, 1930) was a general merchant and political figure in the Northwest Territories, Canada. He represented Qu'Appelle in the 1st Council of the Northwest Territories from 1887 to 1888 and North Qu'Appelle in the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories from 1888 to 1898 as a Conservative. He was born in Ottawa, the son of a Scottish immigrant, and was educated in Ottawa. In 1888, he married Henrietta Aquas Traveller. He went to the Northwest Territories in 1881. Sutherland also served as postmaster for Qu'Appelle. William Charles Sutherland
William Charles Sutherland (June 7, 1865 – March 2, 1940) was the second Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan (1908–1912), i.e., the presiding officer of the legislature. Sutherland was a Liberal Member of the Legislative Assembly who was first elected in the first general election on December 13, 1905, to the first legislature of the newly formed Province of Saskatchewan. Sutherland represented the electoral district of Saskatoon, and served with Premier Walter Scott. He was re-elected in the 1908 and 1912 elections to represent Saskatoon County. On May 23, 1906, Sutherland introduced a resolution to move the capital of the province from Regina to Saskatoon, but the motion was defeated by a vote of 21–2 in the legislature. William Garner Sutherland, D.O. (1873–1954) was an American osteopathic physician and important figure in American osteopathic medicine. Several of his manual therapy techniques are still practiced today by practitioners of osteopathy, although craniosacral therapy is regarded as pseudoscience by the medical community. Sutherland was the first osteopathic physician to conceptualize the cranial approach and teach it systematically. However, Sutherland acknowledged Andrew Taylor Still as the developer of all osteopathy, including the cranial approach. Sutherland was the first person to claim to feel a rhythmic shape change in the bones of the cranium. He later applied this movement to all body tissues and this movement is the agent of change in dysfunctional tissues. He later named this motion the body's "Primary Respiration." William Andrew Sutherland (May 30, 1849 – March 11, 1908) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. Life Sutherland was born on May 30, 1849, in Hopewell, New York. He was the son of Rev. Andrew Sutherland and Mary McLean. He attended the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary and Genesee College in Lima, New York. He was a member of the Psi Upsilon fraternity. After finishing school, Sutherland read law in the office of future New York Supreme Court Justice Edwin A. Nash. He was admitted to practice in 1874. Sir William Sutherland, KCB, PC (4 March 1880 – 19 September 1949) was a Scottish civil servant, Liberal Party politician and colliery owner. He was closely associated with Prime Minister David Lloyd George serving as his private and press secretary and later as his Parliamentary Private Secretary. He served on the North York City Council and the Metropolitan Toronto Council for several years, and challenged Mel Lastman for Mayor of North York in 1976.
