The Quito Open, also known as the Quite Grand Prix, was a Grand Prix affiliated men's professional tennis tournament played from 1979 to 1982. It was held in Quito in Ecuador and played on outdoor clay courts. The city is located at 2,800 m (9,200 ft) above mean sea level. The lower air pressure means breathing is more difficult for players and the ball flies faster. The Ecuador Open Quito was a men's tennis event on the ATP Tour held in the Ecuadorean capital of Quito. Begun in 2015, it was part of the ATP 250 Series. The tournament was played on outdoor clay courts. The event replaced the Chile Open. The city was previously home to the Quito Open, a Grand Prix-affiliated tournament played from 1979 to 1982. Quito is located at 2800 metres above sea level, more than twice as high than the Alps tournaments. Players must adapt to thinner air, which causes breathing difficulties and makes the ball faster. Victor Estrella Burgos won the title in 2015, successfully defended it in 2016 and did so again in 2017. However, he lost in the second round of the 2018 edition to Gerald Melzer. On 24 August 2018, tournament organisers announced that the tournament had folded due to lack of financial support. Rocky Royer (born June 27, 1958) is an American former professional tennis player. Biography Born in Berkeley, California, Royer played collegiate tennis at Rice University for four years. In the early 1980s he competed on the professional tour, winning two Challenger titles. Egan Adams (born June 15, 1959) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. Biography Adams, a native of Miami, went to Archbishop Curley-Notre Dame High School, before competing professionally in the 1980s. His best result on the Grand Prix circuit was reaching the doubles final of the 1982 Quito Open, with Rocky Royer. In 1982 he also made his first US Open main draw appearance, a first round loss to Mark Edmondson, as well as the quarter-finals in Brazil, his best singles performance in a Grand Prix tournament. Ricardo Ycaza (born 16 February 1958) is an Ecuadorian tennis player who was a world top 10 junior, a Davis Cup stalwart, and a world top 100 touring professional. Tennis career His most noteworthy achievement was winning the 1976 US Open Junior tournament. In the semi-finals of that tournament he staged a third-set comeback to defeat John McEnroe after saving two match points at 2–5 in the third set and after coming back from 2–4 in the third-set tiebreaker. (Ycaza was to face McEnroe three more times in junior tournaments, winning each time.) In the final, Ycaza defeated José Luis Clerc of Argentina.
