Quirinus Harder
Quirinus Johan Harder (13 October 1801, in Rotterdam – 21 October 1880, in Vlissingen) was a Dutch architect best known for having designed a large number of lighthouses. He worked as a structural engineer for the Loodswezen, the Dutch organization overseeing all maritime pilots. Harder's lighthouses were made of cast iron, a new material at the time, which allowed for segmented fabrication and construction. Hoge Vuurtoren Van IJmuiden
The hoge vuurtoren van IJmuiden ("high lighthouse of IJmuiden") is a round, cast-iron lighthouse in IJmuiden, Netherlands, designed by Quirinus Harder. It was built in 1878 by D.A. Schretlen & Co, a company in Leiden. Together with the Lage vuurtoren van IJmuiden, the 35-meter high lighthouse forms a pair of leading lights marking the IJgeul (the entrance on the North Sea to the North Sea Canal). Vuurduin
Vuurduin is a lighthouse on the Dutch island Vlieland. The tower is the top part of the former front light of the leading lights in IJmuiden, designed by Quirinus Harder. The lighthouse was placed on Vlieland in 1909, on top of one of the Vuurboetsduin, one of the highest sand dunes (at 45 metres) in the Netherlands. A lookout tower was built next to the lighthouse in 1929. In 1986, the cupola was renovated. While a lighthouse keeper still attends, the lighthouse is fully automated. Stavoren Lighthouse
The Stavoren Lighthouse is a lighthouse near Stavoren on the IJsselmeer, in the Netherlands. On two nearby piers are a red and a green light beacon for the Stavoren harbor. Den Oever Lighthouse
The Den Oever Lighthouse is a cast iron lighthouse in Den Oever, the Netherlands, on the Wadden Sea. Erected in 1885, it was originally located at the western end of the former island of Wieringen where it served as the rear light of a pair of leading lights. In 1930, when the Afsluitdijk was finished, the tower was relocated to the eastern end of Wieringen at Den Oever. While the light was first directed the Wadden Sea, it was moved southward in 1932 and turned to face the IJsselmeer. It was deactivated in 2009. Bornrif
The Ameland Lighthouse, commonly known as Bornrif, is a lighthouse on the Dutch island Ameland, one of the Frisian Islands, on the edge of the North Sea. It was built in 1880 by order of William III of the Netherlands. It was designed by Dutch lighthouse architect Quirinus Harder and built by the foundry Nering Bögel in Deventer. The individual segments were shipped to Ameland and welded together on-site. After World War II a new, weaker lamp was installed, which was replaced by a stronger lamp in 1952. The lighthouse is a Rijksmonument since 1982. Since the end of 2004 it is owned by Ameland, and it was opened for tourists in 2005. The tower has a space for exhibitions. The lighthouse is tall and has 15 floors, with a staircase with 236 steps. The optical installation came from the former Westhoofd Lighthouse in Ouddorp. The Lage vuurtoren van IJmuiden ("low lighthouse of IJmuiden") is a round, cast-iron lighthouse in IJmuiden, Netherlands, designed by Quirinus Harder. It was built in 1878 by D.A. Schretlen & Co, a company in Leiden and activated the following year. In 1909, the top three sections were moved to Vlieland where they serve as a separate lighthouse. In 1966 the lighthouse was moved slightly. Together with the Hoge vuurtoren van IJmuiden, the 24-metre high lighthouse forms a pair of leading lights marking the IJgeul (the entrance on the North Sea to the North Sea Canal). The lighthouse now has five storeys and 88 steps; it is unmanned and not open for visitors. Since 1981 it is a Rijksmonument.
