Quintet (Prokofiev)
Sergei Prokofiev's Quintet in G minor, Op. 39 is a piece of chamber music for oboe, clarinet, violin, viola and double bass, written in 1924. The quintet, closely related to Prokofiev's ballet, '' Trapèze'', contains six movements and lasts 20–25 minutes. Background In 1924, when Prokofiev was staying in Paris, a travelling troupe commissioned a chamber ballet from him. However, the ensemble that provided music accompaniment to the troupe only contained five members. This provided Prokofiev an opportunity to write more chamber music. His most recent chamber piece had been the '' Overture on Hebrew Themes'', Op. 34 (1919). Later, Prokofiev incorporated the ballet music into two pieces: Quintet, Op. 39 (1924) and Divertissement Op. 43 (1925–29). Boston Symphony Orchestra
The Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is an American orchestra based in Boston, Massachusetts. It is the second-oldest of the five major American symphony orchestras commonly referred to as the " Big Five". Founded by Henry Lee Higginson in 1881, the BSO performs most of its concerts at Boston's Symphony Hall and in the summer performs at Tanglewood. Nicholas Urie
Nicholas Urie (born July 29, 1985 in Los Angeles, California) is an American composer of jazz and classical music. Urie teaches jazz composition at the Berklee College of Music. Urie was a recipient of the first annual ASCAP Young Jazz Composer's Award. Urie left Los Angeles to study composition with Bob Brookmeyer in Boston MA. A Graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music with both bachelor's and master's degrees, Urie's music has been heard internationally at festivals and concerts in Peru, Syria, Spain, England, Germany, throughout Scandinavia and the United States. Sergei Prokofiev composed his Divertissement Op.43 for small orchestra. The work is closely related to his ballet, '' Trapèze''. He also made a piano transcription of the work with subtitles for each movement. Overture On Hebrew Themes
Sergei Prokofiev wrote the Overture on Hebrew Themes, Op. 34, in 1919 while he was in the United States. It is scored for the rare combination of clarinet, string quartet and piano. Fifteen years later the composer prepared a version for chamber orchestra, his “Op. 34 bis” or Op. 34a, retaining a separate part for piano but featuring solo cello as much as solo clarinet. Until recently the chamber orchestra version had been the better known, being easily programmable by orchestras, while the original version (for six instruments) requires out-of-the-way planning on the part of a string quartet. A trapeze is a short horizontal bar hung by ropes or metal straps from a ceiling support. It is an aerial apparatus commonly found in circus performances. Trapeze acts may be static, spinning (rigged from a single point), swinging or flying, and may be performed solo, double, triple or as a group act. The name of the apparatus reflects the trapezoid shape made by the horizontal bar, ropes and ceiling support.
