Quiet Design
Quiet Design is an independent music and sound art label based in Austin, Texas, Austin,TX and founded in 2007. Owned and curated by composers Mike Vernusky and Cory Allen (musician), Cory Allen, Quiet Design has released work by over 30 artists from 10 countries. It has been said of Quiet Design that their "intriguing and often brilliant recordings will open your eyes, your ears, and very likely your mind." The label's focus is releasing electronic music and sound art that is described as minimal, avant-garde and experimental. The packaging for each release is custom tailored to the sound of each piece in the catalog. Mike Vernusky (born April 1, 1978) is an American composer, performer and record label owner. He writes music for concertized, theatrical, and filmic environments, primarily through the use of electronic media and live performance. His music has been described as "brash" by the New York Times and 'isolationist ambient' by Wire Magazine. In addition to having his works performed globally, Vernusky has made numerous speaking appearances about the urgency of artistic entrepreneurism including the EMS 2010 Festival in Shanghai and as a regular guest at El Centro Mexicano para la Musica y Artes Sonoras in Morelia, Mexico. Tetuzi Akiyama
Tetuzi Akiyama (Akiyama Tetsuji) (born 13 April 1964) is a Japanese guitarist, violinist, and instrument-maker. Akiyama formed the improvisation group Madhar in 1987, and the classical ensemble Hikyo String Quintet in 1994 (which also included Taku Sugimoto on cello). In 1995, Akiyama and Sugimoto formed a guitar duo, and played at venues in New York City, Chicago, and Detroit. During this time, Akiyama was also a member of Keiji Haino's Nijiumu outfit. Akiyama also formed Sutekina Tea Time (a duo with Takashi Matsuoka) and Mongoose (a trio with Taku Sugimoto and Utah Kawasaki). Jandek is the musical alias of Houston, Texas based lo-fi folk singer Sterling Smith. Since 1978, Jandek has independently released over 45 albums without granting interviews or providing any biographical information, releasing on a self-made label "Corwood Industries". Jandek often plays a highly idiosyncratic and frequently atonal form of folk and blues music, frequently using an open and unconventional chord structure. Alvin Lucier
Alvin Augustus Lucier Jr. (May 14, 1931 – December 1, 2021) was an American composer of experimental music and sound installations that explore acoustic phenomena and auditory perception. A long-time music professor at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, Lucier was a member of the influential Sonic Arts Union, which included Robert Ashley, David Behrman, and Gordon Mumma. Yoshio Machida
is an experimental musician, a steelpanist, composer, and visual artist. Person A member of ASCAP, Machida studied minimal art, music and film at the Tama Art University under Kuniharu Akiyama, Yoshiaki Touno, Sakumi Hagiwara and Kishio Suga. In the 1990s, Machida worked for an international cooperation in Asia and Africa. Kim Myhr (born 17 December 1981 in Trondheim, Norway) is a Norwegian guitarist and composer in the field of experimental music. Career Kim Myhr (born 1981) is an active voice of the creative music scene in Norway, both as a composer and as a guitarist, with frequent performances throughout Europe, Australia, Asia and North- as well as South-America. As a composer, Myhr wrote "stems and cages" for the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra in 2009, a large ensemble including Sidsel Endresen, Christian Wallumrød, Jim Denley among others.
