Pedro Fernandes de Queirós ( es, Pedro Fernández de Quirós) (1563–1614) was a Portuguese navigator in the service of Spain. He is best known for his involvement with Spanish voyages of discovery in the Pacific Ocean, in particular the 1595–1596 voyage of Álvaro de Mendaña y Neira, and for leading a 1605–1606 expedition that crossed the Pacific in search of Terra Australis. Early life Queirós (or Quirós as he signed) was born in Évora, Portugal in 1563. As the Portuguese and Spanish monarchies had been unified under the king of Spain in 1580 (following the vacancy of the Portuguese throne, which lasted for sixty years, until 1640, when the Portuguese monarchy was restored), Queirós entered Spanish service as a young man and became an experienced seaman and navigator. Pedro Miguel Barbosa Queirós (born 8 August 1984) is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays for F.C. Tirsense as a right back. Club career Born in Santo Tirso, Porto District, Queirós played lower league or amateur football until the age of 24, when he signed for Romanian club AF Gloria Bistrița in summer 2008. He returned to his country in the following transfer window, joining F.C. Paços de Ferreira but being rarely played during his spell, which also included a loan to U.D. Oliveirense from the Segunda Liga. Queirós returned to the Primeira Liga in the 2011–12 season, being first choice for C.D. Feirense but suffering relegation as second from last. Renato Moreira Nunes de Queirós (born 20 July 1977) is a Portuguese retired footballer who played as a forward. Club career Born in Amarante, Porto District, Queirós started playing football with hometown club Amarante FC. He would go on to represent modest Portuguese sides: F.C. Felgueiras, F.C. Lixa and A.D. Sanjoanense (with whom, in 2001–02 season, he scored four goals in as many games in the Portuguese Cup). Subsequently, Queirós made his debut in the Primeira Liga, with F.C.
