The 2600 class were a class of diesel locomotive built by A Goninan & Co, Townsville for Queensland Rail in 1983-1984. History The 2600 class entered service on the McNaughton and Newlands lines. They were based at Pring depot near Bowen, and were a standard General Electric export model (similar locomotives were also used in Brazil, Nigeria and Tunisia). Between July 2000 and May 2001, all 13 were rebuilt by A Goninan & Co with cab extensions (the stock GE cab was replaced with the standard Queensland Rail "maxicab"). Their weight increased to . GAP Line
The Collinsville – Newlands – North Goonyella line, also known as the Goonyella – Abbot Point (GAP) line and the Newlands railway system, is a railway line in Queensland, Australia. It was opened in a series of sections between 1922 and 2012. It commences at Merinda, near Bowen and extends south to North Goonyella coal mine, connecting to the Goonyella railway line. The nearby 13 km line from Kaili to Abbot Point is considered part of the GAP system. History The Bowen Basin is today recognised as the largest coal resource in Australia, but its relative remoteness resulted in a lack of priority for a line that would facilitate development of the coalfield. Bowen is a coastal town and locality in the Whitsunday Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Bowen had a population of 10,377 people. Co-Co Locomotives
Co-Co is the wheel arrangement for diesel or electric locomotives with two six-wheeled bogies with all axles powered, with a separate traction motor per axle. The equivalent UIC classification (Europe) for this arrangement is Co′Co′, or C-C for AAR (North America). Use Co-Cos are most suited to freight work as the extra wheels give them good traction. They are also popular because the greater number of axles results in a lower axle load to the track. History The first mainline diesel-electric locomotives were of Bo-Bo arrangement. As they grew in power and weight, from 1937 the EMD E-units used an A1A-A1A layout with six axles to reduce axle load, but only four of them were powered. Newlands Coal Mine
The Newlands Coal Mine is a coal mine located in the north of the Bowen Basin at Newlands about 28 km northwest of Glenden in North Queensland, Australia. The mine has coal reserves amounting to 413 million tonnes of low ash steaming coal, one of the largest coal reserves in Australia and the world. The mine has an annual production capacity of 10.6 million tonnes of coal. History The mine is currently owned by Anglo−Swiss Glencore corporation. Mining operations began in 1983. Originally the mine was operated by the major owner MIM (Mount Isa Mines) as part of the NCA (Newlands Collinsville Abbot Point) project. Operations at the mine are conducted both underground and in an open-cut pit from a single coal seam, the Upper Newlands seam which has an average thickness of six metres.
