The Queensland Railways A10 Avonside class locomotive was a class of steam locomotives operated by the Queensland Railways. History In 1864, the Avonside Engine Company, Bristol built four locomotives for the Queensland Railway. After being built they were dismantled and reassembled at North Ipswich Railway Workshops. Originally classified the A class, per Queensland Railway's classification system they were designated the A10 Avonside class in 1890, A representing they had two driving axles, and 10 the cylinder diameter in inches. One, 3 ''Lady Bowen'', operated the first Queensland Railways service in 1865 between Grandchester and Ipswich. Avonside Engine Company
The Avonside Engine Company was a locomotive manufacturer in Avon Street, St. Philip's, Bristol, England between 1864 and 1934. However the business originated with an earlier enterprise Henry Stothert and Company. Origins The firm was originally started by Henry Stothert in 1837 as Henry Stothert and Company. Henry was the son of George Stothert (senior), founder of the nearby Bath engineering firm of Stothert & Pitt. Henry's brother, also named George, was manager of the same firm. The company was given an order for two broad gauge () Firefly class express passenger engines ''Arrow'' and ''Dart'', with driving wheels, delivered for the opening of the Great Western Railway (GWR) from Bristol to Bath on 31 August 1840. This was soon followed by an order for eight smaller Sun class engines with driving wheels. Rockhampton railway station is located on the North Coast line in Queensland, Australia. It serves the city of Rockhampton. It is the terminus of the electrified section of line from Brisbane. Avonside Locomotives
Avonside is an eastern suburb in Christchurch, New Zealand. It is one of the oldest suburbs of the city, with only Heathcote Valley, Heathcote being older. History The suburb was named after Holy Trinity Avonside, which was built beside the Avon River (Canterbury), Avon River in 1855. The 1874 part of the church was designed by the eminent architect Benjamin Mountfort who is buried in the churchyard. The church was damaged in the 2010 Canterbury earthquake and whilst under repair, was damaged beyond repair in the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake and demolished later that year. Avonside is home to Avonside Girls' High School. It also has the Avon River flowing through it. Faugh-a-Ballagh (foaled 1841 in Ireland) was a Thoroughbred racehorse. A brother to Birdcatcher, Faugh-a-Ballagh was sold to E. J. Erwin in 1842. He ran once as a two-year-old at the Doncaster's Champagne Stakes, finishing third to The Cure and Sorella. He then began his three-year-old season as the first Irish-bred horse to win the St. Leger Stakes, then beat Corona in a match race. He won the Grand Duke Michael Stakes, then the Cesarewitch, and came second to Evenus at the Cambridgeshire. As a four-year-old, he finished second to The Emperor in the Emperor of Russia's Plate. In 1855, Faugh-a-Ballagh was exported to France. There he sired Fille de l'air, The Oaks and French Oaks winner. Maryborough railway station is a heritage-listed railway station at Lennox Street, Maryborough, Fraser Coast Region, Queensland, Australia. Grandchester railway station is a heritage-listed former railway station at Ipswich Road, Grandchester, City of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1875 to 1876. It is also known as Bigge's Camp. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History Grandchester, originally known as Bigge's Camp, is the western terminus for the first railway in Queensland and the first section of the Main Line to Toowoomba, opened from Ipswich on 31 July 1865.
