Queen Alexandra, Edmonton
Queen Alexandra is a mixed residential and commercial neighbourhood in south west Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The neighbourhood, once part of the City of Strathcona, is named for the British queen Alexandra of Denmark. The north edge of the neighbourhood, along Whyte Avenue is part of Old Strathcona, a popular commercial and cultural area of Edmonton. The neighbourhood is bounded on the north by Whyte Avenue, on the west by 109 Street, on the east by 104 Street, and on the south by 70 Avenue. The University of Alberta campus is located a short distance to the west of the neighbourhood. Access to the downtown core is north along both 109 Street and 104 Street. The community is represented by the Queen Alexandra Community League, established in 1962, which maintains a community hall located at 104 Street and University Avenue. Allendale, Edmonton
Allendale is a residential neighbourhood located in south west Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The neighbourhood is named for the Allen family, who owned a farm there. It was annexed by the City of Strathcona in 1907. Residential development in Allendale commenced prior to the end of World War II. Approximately one residence in eleven (9%) were constructed at this time according to the 2001 federal census. Approximately half the residences in the neighbourhood (48.1%) were constructed between the end of World War II and 1960. One in three (34.6%) of residences were constructed during the 1960s and 1970s. A small number of residences were constructed after 1980. Seven out of ten (72%) of residences are single-family dwellings, according to the 2005 municipal census, making them the most common type of home in the neighbourhood. Parkallen is a residential neighbourhood in south Edmonton, Alberta, Canada located just to the east of the University of Alberta farm and the Neil Crawford Centre. Most of the neighbourhood development occurred after the end of World War II with eight out of ten residences constructed by 1960 according to the 2005 municipal census. McKernan, Edmonton
McKernan is a neighbourhood located in southwest Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It is named for John McKernan, a prominent businessman in the City of Strathcona whose parents' farm was located there beginning in the late 1870s. "Jack" McKernan (1870-1918) was the force behind the Princess Theatre, which still stands on Whyte Avenue. The McKernan-Belgravia LRT station is located in the west portion of the neighbourhood at the northwest corner of 114 Street and 76 Avenue, adjacent to neighbouring Belgravia. Garneau, Edmonton
Garneau is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city of Edmonton, Canada. Prior to 1912, it was part of the City of Strathcona. It is named after one of its first inhabitants, Laurent Garneau (ca. 1840-1921), a former Manitoba Métis rebel and Hudson's Bay Company employee who with his wife and family settled there around 1874. It is located just west of the Strathcona neighbourhood and just east of the main University of Alberta campus. The neighbourhood overlooks the North Saskatchewan River valley. Mill Creek Ravine
Mill Creek Ravine is located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and is a part of the River Valley parks and trail system. It contains the last stretch of Mill Creek, before it flows into a culvert for its end run to the North Saskatchewan River. The ravine ends where the land opens onto the North Saskatchewan River valley near the west end of Cloverdale on the opposite bank from downtown. Geography Mill Creek begins in rural sloughs east of Edmonton and flows northward, in part through the ravine park. Strathcona Composite High School
Strathcona High School, colloquially referred to as Scona and SCHS, is a public high school located in Edmonton, Alberta. The school was referred to as Strathcona Composite High School until 2014. A $6.1 million modernization project was completed in 2015 and the school now enrolls approximately 1500 students. Overview The original Strathcona High School opened in 1908, in the city of Strathcona, Alberta.
