Quarantine Power Station
Quarantine Power Station is a gas-powered electricity generation facility near the northern end of Torrens Island in the northwestern suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia. It is at the opposite end of Torrens Island from AGL Energy's Torrens Island and Barker Inlet power stations. It gets its name from the Torrens Island Quarantine Station which was nearby. The power station is owned by Origin Energy and is configured as a peaking power plant. It has a capacity of 224MW produced by open cycle gas turbines. It was initially installed in 2002 with four Alstom GT10B (now designated Siemens SGT600 after Siemens bought the Alstom Medium-sized GT business) turbines generating 95MW of power. Torrens Island is an island in the Australian state of South Australia located in the Adelaide metropolitan area in the Port River Estuary about northwest of the Adelaide city centre. Barker Inlet Power Station
Barker Inlet Power Station is a power station in South Australia. It was announced on 7 June 2017 by AGL Energy to replace part of its ageing Torrens Island Power Station and was built alongside the existing station on Torrens Island in the northwestern suburbs of Adelaide. The power station was commissioned on 4 November 2019. Construction and development Construction was expected to start in the third quarter of 2017, with commissioning in the first quarter of 2019, however that start date passed before the development application had been submitted. Construction was announced to begin on 5 February 2018 and expected to be operational in the second half of 2019. The new power station is expected to be 28% more efficient than the oldest gas turbines at Torrens island, and can ramp from zero to full capacity in five minutes. The SEA Gas pipeline ''(South East Australia Gas pipeline)'' is a 687 km natural gas pipeline from the Iona Gas Plant near Port Campbell in Victoria to the Pelican Point Power Station at Port Adelaide. It connects Adelaide's gas supply to sources from Victoria's Otway Basin, thus increasing the security of natural gas supply to Adelaide. The pipeline is owned and operated by South East Australia Gas Pty Ltd who are owned in a 50-50 partnership by APA Group (Australia) and the Retail Employees Superannuation Trust. Peaking power plants, also known as peaker plants, and occasionally just "peakers", are power plants that generally run only when there is a high demand, known as peak demand, for electricity. Because they supply power only occasionally, the power supplied commands a much higher price per kilowatt hour than base load power. Torrens Island Power Station
Torrens Island Power Station is located on Torrens Island, near Adelaide, South Australia and is operated by AGL Energy. It burns natural gas in eight steam turbines to generate up to 1,280 MW of electricity. The gas is supplied via the SEAGas pipeline from Victoria, and the Moomba Adelaide Pipeline System (MAPS) from Moomba in the Cooper Basin.
