Bill Quackenbush
Hubert George Quackenbush (March 2, 1922 – September 12, 1999), known as Bill Quackenbush, was a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman who played for the Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League. During his 14-year career, he was the first defenceman to win the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy. He won the award after playing the entire 1948–49 season without recording a penalty. The penalty-less season was part of a total of 131 consecutive games he played without being assessed a penalty. Quackenbush, considered to be an elite offensive defenceman during his career, was named to the NHL All-Star team five times, played in eight NHL All-Star games and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1976. Following his retirement from professional ice hockey, he spent 18 years as head coach of various teams at Princeton University. Charles Quackenbush (born April 20, 1954) is an American former politician and Florida law enforcement officer. A Republican, he served as Insurance Commissioner of California from 1995–2000 and as a California State Assemblyman representing the 22nd District, from 1986–1994. Background and political career Quackenbush was born on April 20, 1954 in Tacoma, Washington. As a child, he grew up in a military family and after graduating University of Notre Dame on a full ROTC scholarship, he joined the United States Army and rose to the rank of Captain as a helicopter pilot. In 1982, he left the military to join the family business in Silicon Valley. He was elected as a Republican to the California Assembly in 1986. In 1994 he was elected insurance commissioner, effectively applying considerable campaign contributions from various insurance companies. He won re-election in 1998. Henry Marcus Quackenbush (April 27, 1847 – September 8, 1933), commonly called "H.M.", was an American inventor and industrialist who founded the H.M. Quackenbush Company in Herkimer, New York. His company was widely known for its air rifles and for the invention of the metal, spring-jointed nutcracker. Early apprenticeship and invention of extension ladder Quackenbush was born in Herkimer, New York, in 1847. At age fourteen, he began an apprenticeship at gun manufacturer Remington Arms Co., where he acquired skills as a metalworker and gunmaker. At the age of 16, he invented the extension ladder, which he patented on Oct. 22, 1867, and then began manufacturing them himself, until he sold the patent for $500. Maxwell Joseph Quackenbush (August 29, 1928 — April 17, 2020) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who played 61 games in the National Hockey League for the Chicago Black Hawks and Boston Bruins between 1950 and 1951. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1947 to 1955, was spent in the minor leagues. He was the younger brother of Bill Quackenbush. In his post-hockey career, he served with the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force, and was known to many elementary school children in the '60s and '70s as "Constable Quackenbush", instructing them on traffic safety in partnership with Elmer the Safety Elephant. Dr.Robert Mead Quackenbush, MSW, PhD (July 23, 1929 – May 17, 2021) was an American author and illustrator of children's books. He authored 110 books and illustrated 60 more by 1999. He is noted for creating the characters Henry the Duck, Detective Mole, and Miss Mallard. Early life Quackenbush was born in Los Angeles on July 23, 1929. His ancestors immigrated to New York from the Netherlands during the 17th century. His father, Roy, worked as an engineer; his mother, Virginia (Arbogast), was employed as a secretary. He was raised in Phoenix, Arizona. His father died in a traffic collision several days before Christmas while on a business trip when Quackenbush was nine years old.
