Jaga Jazzist (also known as Jaga) is a Norwegian experimental jazz band, that rose to prominence when the BBC named their second album, ''A Livingroom Hush'' (Smalltown Supersound/Ninja Tune), the best jazz album of 2002. (in Norwegian) Biography The core of the band are the brothers and the main songwriters, Lars and Martin Horntveth. Martin formed Jaga Jazzist together with Ivar Christian Johansen in 1994 while they still were in their teens, though Johansen later left the group. The brothers are also prominent figures of the Norwegian pop act The National Bank. Jaga Jazzist nearly created a sensation with their debut album ''Jævla Jazzist Grete Stitz'' (1996), that contained playful, humorous jazz with elements of rap. The EP ''Magazine'' (1998) showed signs of the catchy, cinematic approach to jazz music they later become known for. Øystein Moen
Øystein Moen (born 16 August 1980) is a Norwegian jazz pianist and composer known for his participation in the bands Jaga Jazzist and Puma. Career Moen was born in Steinkjer, and studied music on the Jazz program at Trondheim Musikkonsevatorium, where he and some fellow students started the band Puma, a cousin band musically to Supersilent. Puma is Øystein Moen (synthesizers and electronics), Stian Westerhus (guitar and electronics) and Gard Nilssen (drums). Their new album, ''Half Nelson Courtship'' (2010), shows a band with a stronger identity, clearer focus, more mature and fully developed musical ideas and directions. ''A Livingroom Hush'' is the second album of Jaga Jazzist, released in 2001 by Ninja Tune under the authority of the Warner Music Group. The BBC named it the best jazz album of 2002. A jazz band (jazz ensemble or jazz combo) is a musical ensemble that plays jazz music. Jazz bands vary in the quantity of its members and the style of jazz that they play but it is common to find a jazz band made up of a rhythm section and a horn section. The size of a jazz band is closely related to the style of jazz they play as well as the type of venues in which they play. Stian Westerhus (born 2 April 1979) is a Norwegian guitarist known for his experimental style, explored with keyboardist Øystein Moen in the bands Jaga Jazzist and Puma and with Sidsel Endresen, Nils Petter Molvær, Arve Henriksen, Jan Bang, and Ingar Zach. Career Westerhus holds a bachelor in jazz from Middlesex University under Stuart Hall, and a master from the Jazz program at Trondheim Musikkonservatorium, (NTNU, 2005). He was first recognised by a broader audience within the experimental jazz band Puma, with whom he released four albums. Anders Hana
Anders Hana (born 7 August 1982 in Stavanger, Norway) is a Norwegian musician (guitar), composer and marine biologist, known as a veteran of the bands ''Noxagt'', ''Ultralyd'' and ''Moha!'', and a series of wildlife projects in northern Norway. Career Hana established ''Jazzuken'' in Stavanger, Norway in 2003, and operated the jazz club Sting there for three years. He moved to Oslo, where he cooperated with Mats Gustafsson at ''All Ears'' (2005). He has released several albums with the drummer Morten J. Morten Qvenild
Morten Qvenild (born 31 August 1978) is a Norwegian jazz pianist, band leader, and producer. Career Qvenild started his jazz career in the big band Ung Musikk in 1995, followed by studies on the Jazz program at the Norges Musikkhøgskole. He used to play in ''Østenfor Sol'' with Ole Jørn Myklebust, with Myklebust's OJ Trio, Shining (1999–2003), and Jaga Jazzist (2000–2002). Since 2000 Qvenild is the "orchestra" of Susanna & the Magical Orchestra and an original member of Solveig Slettahjell's Slow Motion Quintet as well a duo partner. Sjur Miljeteig (born 4 January 1974) is a Norwegian jazz musician (trumpet), composer and author, married 20 October 2007 to the actress Ane Dahl Torp (1975), and they live in Oslo with their two children, a boy (2010) and a girl (2012). He is known for his performances of the music of Miles Davis in a band including Håvard Wiik, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Peder Kjellsby. Jørgen Munkeby (born 3 September 1980 in Oslo, Norway) is a Norwegian jazz and heavy metal musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer, known as the frontman in the band Shining and former member of Jaga Jazzist. Career Munkeby formed Shining as a jazz quartet in 1999, together with fellow students from the Norwegian Academy of Music, Morten Qvenild, Torstein Lofthus and Aslak Hartberg. He played flute, alto flute, tenor saxophone, bass clarinet and keyboards in jazz band Jaga Jazzist (1994–2002), where he was one of the main composers on the album A Livingroom Hush, which was named the best jazz album of 2002 by the BBC.
