Punta Carretas Shopping
Punta Carretas Shopping is a shopping mall of Montevideo, Uruguay. It is located in the neighborhood Punta Carretas. History The shopping center is located in the Punta Carretas Penitentiary building, originally opened in 1915. For decades, this penitentiary and the Church of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart were the only important buildings in the neighborhood. In 1971, in a turbulent time for the country, the spectacular flight of more than 100 prisoners took place, Tupamaro guerrillas. Towards the end of 1986, after an imposing mutiny, it was evicted and remained empty for a few years. In 1992 it was decided to start recycling and remodeling the property. Shopping Mall
A shopping mall (or simply mall) is a North American term for a large indoor shopping center, usually anchored by department stores. The term "mall" originally meant a pedestrian promenade with shops along it (that is, the term was used to refer to the walkway itself which was merely bordered by such shops), but in the late 1960s, it began to be used as a generic term for the large enclosed shopping centers that were becoming commonplace at the time. Punta Carretas is a ''barrio'' (neighbourhood or district) of Montevideo, Uruguay. Location Punta Carretas shares borders with Parque Rodó and Pocitos to the north, while from east south and west, it is delimited by the coastline, including the Rambla (seaside avenue): Rambla Presidente Wilson to the west, Rambla Mahatma Gandhi to the east. The Church of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart ( es, Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Sagrado Corazón), popularly known as Iglesia Punta Carretas (due to its location in the neighbourhood of Punta Carretas) is a Roman Catholic parish church in Montevideo, Uruguay. The Tupamaros – National Liberation Movement ( es, Movimiento de Liberación Nacional – Tupamaros, MLN-T), widely known as Tupamaros, was a Marxist-Leninist urban guerrilla group in Uruguay in the 1960s and 1970s. The MLN-T is inextricably linked to its most important leader, Raúl Sendic, and his brand of social politics. Galerías Pacífico is a shopping centre in Buenos Aires, Argentina, located at the intersection of Florida Street and Córdoba Avenue. Overview The Beaux Arts building was designed by the architects Emilio Agrelo and Roland Le Vacher in 1889 to accommodate a shop called the ''Argentine Bon Marché'', modelled on the Le Bon Marché in Paris. In 1896 part of the building was transformed into the first home for the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes and in 1908 the British-owned Buenos Aires and Pacific railway company acquired part of the building for offices. The company's name derived from the fact that its intention was to operate a train service linking Buenos Aires and Valparaíso in Chile, thereby giving access to the Pacific Ocean.
