Punta Carretas is a ''barrio'' (neighbourhood or district) of Montevideo, Uruguay. Location Punta Carretas shares borders with Parque Rodó and Pocitos to the north, while from east south and west, it is delimited by the coastline, including the Rambla (seaside avenue): Rambla Presidente Wilson to the west, Rambla Mahatma Gandhi to the east. Club De Golf Del Uruguay
Club de Golf del Uruguay is an Uruguayan sports and social club from the city of Montevideo. Although golf is the main sport of the institution, the club hosts a large variety of sports such as basketball, field hockey, football, karate, pilates, rugby union, swimming, tennis, volleyball, and yoga, apart from other social activities. The club was originally established as "Uruguay Golf Club", being its president Haroldo Capurro. In 1922 the club affiliated to Uruguayan Golf Association. The Golf Club also entrusted the association its courses to be built in Punta Carretas with the purpose of encouraging tourism at the region. The golf course is located on the Rambla of Montevideo that runs alongside the Río de la Plata. It was designed by Alister MacKenzie and has 18 holes and 6,635 yards. The city of Montevideo, capital of Uruguay, is divided into 62 ''barrios'' (neighborhoods or districts), each with its own identity, demographic characteristics and activities appropriate to the socio-cultural level of its inhabitants. The outer barrios of Montevideo are largely rural. In a more general usage of the word ''barrio'', some people refer to the biggest large-scale residential complexes of Montevideo as barrios, although they do not appear as such in official lists. The Church of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart ( es, Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Sagrado Corazón), popularly known as Iglesia Punta Carretas (due to its location in the neighbourhood of Punta Carretas) is a Roman Catholic parish church in Montevideo, Uruguay. Punta Brava Lighthouse (Faro de Punta Brava), also known as Punta Carretas Lighthouse, is a lighthouse in Punta Carretas, Montevideo, Uruguay. It was erected in 1876. The lighthouse has a height of 21 metres and its light reaches away, with a flash every ten seconds. In 1962, the lighthouse became electric. The lighthouse is important for guiding boats into the Banco Inglés, Buceo Port or the entrance of the Santa Lucía River, west of Montevideo city. Punta Carretas Shopping is a shopping mall of Montevideo, Uruguay. It is located in the neighborhood Punta Carretas. History The shopping center is located in the Punta Carretas Penitentiary building, originally opened in 1915. For decades, this penitentiary and the Church of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart were the only important buildings in the neighborhood. In 1971, in a turbulent time for the country, the spectacular flight of more than 100 prisoners took place, Tupamaro guerrillas. Towards the end of 1986, after an imposing mutiny, it was evicted and remained empty for a few years. In 1992 it was decided to start recycling and remodeling the property. Holocaust Memorial, Montevideo
The Memorial to the Holocaust of the Jewish People ( es, link=no, Memorial del Holocausto del Pueblo Judío) is an outdoor memorial dedicated to victims of the Holocaust. The memorial is located at the junction of Rambla Presidente Wilson and Artigas Boulevard, in the Montevidean neighbourhood of Punta Carretas, on the shores of the River Plate, in Uruguay. The memorial is around 120 metres long, and is mostly made of pink granite, with a central window looking out at the sea. A pair of railway rails are at the approach to the memorial, and the central part of the memorial has two wooden bridge crossings. It also includes several inscribed stele, including one signed by Elie Wiesel. It was designed by Gastón Boero, Fernando Fabiano and Sylvia Perossio, with landscaping by Carlos Pellegrino.
