Public Service Commission (Fiji)
The Public Service Commission (PSC) is a statutory agency in Fiji within the Ministry of Civil Service that is responsible for overseeing standards of all civil servants. Established in 1970 by Fiji's constitution, the Commission is led by a chairperson and consists of not less than three and not more than five members; all appointed by the President of Fiji on the advice of the Constitutional Offices Commission. History The Commission was formally established on Fiji's independence by section 104 of the 1970 constitution, with powers to "make appointments to public offices... and to remove and to exercise disciplinary control over persons holding or acting in such offices". Amnesty International (also referred to as Amnesty or AI) is an international non-governmental organization focused on human rights, with its headquarters in the United Kingdom. The organization says it has more than ten million members and supporters around the world. Rishi Ram
Rishi Ram (born 17 August 1947) is a Fijian civil servant and former diplomat of Indian descent. From 2007 to 2009 he was Chairman of the Public Service Commission. He was the first ethnic Indian to head the PSC. Ram served as Deputy Secretary of the PSC from June 1990 to April 1993. He was Secretary for Women and Multi-Ethnic Affairs from 1993 to 1994, and for Urban Housing and Development from 1994 to 2001, when he served briefly as Ambassador to Japan, until 2002. Hector Hatch
Hector Rex Hatch (6 February 1936 – 14 April 2016) was a Fijian boxing, boxer, politician, and civil servant. He represented Fiji as a boxer at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia. There, he competed in the welterweight category, losing 5–0 on points in the first round to Nicolae Linca of Romania who subsequently won the gold medal. Hatch served as Minister for Public Enterprises (Fiji), Minister for Public Enterprises and Minister for Public Sector Reform (Fiji), Public Sector Reform in the interim Cabinet of Fiji, Cabinet formed by Laisenia Qarase in the wake of the 2000 Fijian coup d'état. 2022 Fijian General Election
General elections were held in Fiji on 14 December 2022 to elect the 55 members of Parliament. The elections took place following the passage of controversial electoral amendments. In addition to a struggling economy, significant campaign issues included the national debt, ethnic tensions and tackling poverty. During the preliminary count, the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) app displaying the results experienced a glitch, prompting FEO to take down the app temporarily. Once the app was back in operation, the vote tally showed the ruling FijiFirst party leading, resulting in five opposition parties demanding a recount and for the counting process to cease. Observers said they had not seen any significant voting irregularities, adding that an initial anomaly with an app showing the results had been rectified. 2013 Constitution Of Fiji
Fiji's fourth constitution was signed into law by President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau on September 6, 2013, coming into effect immediately. It is the first to eliminate race-based electoral rolls, race-based seat quotas, district-based representation, the unelected upper chamber, and the role of the hereditary Council of Chiefs. 2009 Fijian Constitutional Crisis
The Fijian constitutional crisis of 2009 began on Friday, 10 April 2009. Fijian President Ratu Josefa Iloilo announced on a nationwide radio broadcast that he was abrogating the Constitution of Fiji. He dismissed all judges and constitutional appointees and assumed all governance in the country after the Court of Appeal ruled that the government of Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama was illegal. Iloilo reinstalled Bainimarama as PM and his Cabinet members to their positions. He also instituted emergency rule which increased police powers and allowed media censorship. ''The Fiji Times'' is a daily English-language newspaper published in Suva, Fiji. Established in Levuka on 4 September 1869 by George Littleton Griffiths, it is Fiji's oldest newspaper still operating. ''The Fiji Times'' is owned by Motibhai Group of Companies, which purchased it from Rupert Murdoch's News Corp on 22 September 2010. Anare Jale
Anare Jale (born 1949 / 1950) is a Fijian civil servant, diplomat, and politician. He is a former member of the Parliament of Fiji, and vice-president of the Social Democratic Liberal Party. Jale was educated at Onolevu District School, Ratu Kadavulevu School, and Suva Grammar School, before studying at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand and the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. He joined the Fijian civil service as a labour inspector, and worked for the Ministry of labour for 25 years before becoming deputy secretary for regional development in 1995. From 1997 to 1999 he was permanent secretary for labour and industrial relations, and from 1999 to 2000 he was secretary for the public service. Stuart Huggett
Stuart Huggett (died 10 September 2021) was a British-born Fijian architect, businessman, and civil servant, who served as Chairman of the Public Service Commission from 2004 to 2006, when he was removed from office on 6 December 2006 by the Military junta which had seized power the previous day. In addition, Huggett was a Director of Architects Pacific Limited, which is based in Suva and in Sydney, Australia and the Honorary Consul for Spain. Huggett was born in Bath, England. He graduated from the Royal Western England College of Architecture, now the University of Bristol. After his marriage, he spent a year in Zaria, Nigeria, during the Nigerian civil war in the late 1960s.
