Proposed Melbourne Tram Extensions
Numerous proposals have been made for improvements to the Melbourne tram network, the largest such network in the world. Nearly all of these have been for track extensions of existing lines to connect with nearby railway station or to service new areas and suburbs. Extensions currently in planning Caulfield to Chadstone, Monash and Rowville route In April 2018, the Government of Victoria, State Government of Victoria (Australia), Victoria announced a new extension of the tram network from Caulfield, Victoria, Caulfield. The 18 km (11.1 mi) extension would run from Caulfield station to Chadstone Shopping Centre, Chadstone, Monash University, Waverley Park and Rowville, Victoria, Rowville. The Public Transport Users Association is a community-based public transport lobby group in Victoria, Australia, based in Melbourne. It is run entirely by volunteers and has no full-time staff. History and aims The organisation was founded in 1976 as the Train Travellers Association, and became prominent after the controversial Lonie Report recommended huge freeway expansion and closure of most public passenger transport in the city. Melbourne tram route 6 is operated by Yarra Trams on the Melbourne tram network from Moreland to Glen Iris. The 19.2 kilometre route is operated out of Brunswick and Malvern depots with Z, B and D class trams. History Route 6 was allocated to the line between Glen Iris and City (Swanston Street) on 21 November 1929, the same day that numbers were allocated to the rest of the Swanston Street trams. Trams traditionally terminated at the Victoria Street terminus, but following an accident in 1991, trams instead terminated at the Queensberry Street crossover. Due to congestion during peak hours at the crossover, some trams continued north to Melbourne University. Finally on 17 January 1996, a permanent shunt was built at Melbourne University. Malvern () is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 8 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Stonnington local government area.
