Progressive Labor Party (United States)
The Progressive Labor Party (PLP) is an anti-revisionist Marxist–Leninist communist party in the United States. It was established in January 1962 as the Progressive Labor Movement following a split in the Communist Party USA, adopting its new name at a convention held in the spring of 1965. It was involved in the anti-Vietnam War movement of the 1960s and early 1970s through its Worker Student Alliance faction of Students for a Democratic Society. The PLP publishes a fortnightly newspaper, ''Challenge''. The Progressive Labour Party (PLP) was a left-wing political party in Australia. The party was founded by dissident former members of the Australian Labor Party and the original Communist Party of Australia in 1996. The party claims that the ALP has abandoned its traditional working-class supporters as it has moved towards the political right. The party ran Senate tickets in New South Wales and Western Australia and contested several House of Representatives seats at the 9 October 2004 election. The party regularly makes submissions to Senate and other committees on a broad range of issues. Rod Noble, the national secretary of the Progressive Labour Party, described the Progressive Labor Party as a "broad alliance" of socialists. The Progressive Labour Party (PLP) is one of the two political parties in Bermuda. At the 18 July 2017 general election, the party won 24 of the 36 seats in the Bermudian House of Assembly to become the governing party. The party was founded in 1963, the first political party in Bermuda, and the oldest still active. It formed government from 1998 to 2012, and again since 2017. Formation The Progressive Labour Party was founded in 1963 by Wilfred Mose Allen, Hugh Ryo Richardson, Albert Peter Smith, Edward DeJean, Walter N.H. Robinson, Austin Wilson and Dilton C. Cann. These seven had earlier met in Richardson's garage, before holding the first formal meeting of the PLP on 10 February 1963 in Robinson's office in Hamilton. The Progressive Labour Party was a political party in Saint Lucia. History The party was created by a split of the Saint Lucia Labour Party in 1981. It first contested national elections in 1982, when it finished second behind the United Workers' Party with 27.1% of the vote, but only won a single seat, taken by Jon Odlum. In the 6 April 1987 elections the party's vote share fell to 9.3% and they lost their single seat.
