Progressive Labour Party (Bermuda)
The Progressive Labour Party (PLP) is one of the two political parties in Bermuda. At the 18 July 2017 general election, the party won 24 of the 36 seats in the Bermudian House of Assembly to become the governing party. The party was founded in 1963, the first political party in Bermuda, and the oldest still active. It formed government from 1998 to 2012, and again since 2017. Formation The Progressive Labour Party was founded in 1963 by Wilfred Mose Allen, Hugh Ryo Richardson, Albert Peter Smith, Edward DeJean, Walter N.H. Robinson, Austin Wilson and Dilton C. Cann. These seven had earlier met in Richardson's garage, before holding the first formal meeting of the PLP on 10 February 1963 in Robinson's office in Hamilton. Edward David Burt
Edward David Burt (born 23 November 1978) is the Premier of Bermuda and leader of the Progressive Labour Party (PLP). Burt is Bermuda's youngest ever premier, having taken office at the age of 38. Early life and career His mother, Merlin, is from Jamaica, while his father, Gerald, is Bermudian. He is married to Kristin and has two children, Nia and Edward. Burt attended the George Washington University in Washington, D.C., double majoring in finance and information systems and attaining a master's degree in information systems development. During his time at GW, he served as president of the George Washington University Student Association. He attained a Project Management Professional certification in 2009. Jennifer Meredith Smith
Dame Jennifer Meredith Smith, DBE, JP, DHumL, MP (born 1947) was the Premier of Bermuda from 1998 until 2003, the first premier who was not a member of the United Bermuda Party. Affectionately referred to as "Dame Jennifer", she has marked her place in Bermuda's history as the first woman to lead a political party to an election victory, the first Progressive Labour Party Shadow Minister of Education, the first and so far only leader of the PLP to lead the party to win two consecutive general elections, the first female Speaker of the House of Assembly and the second woman to serve as Premier. Bermudian General Election, 2007
General elections were held in Bermuda on 18 December 2007 to elect all 36 members of the House of Assembly. The incumbent Progressive Labour Party (PLP) led by Ewart Brown was returned for a third term, with 22 of the 36 seats of the House of Assembly, with the opposition United Bermuda Party (UBP) winning the remaining 14 seats. Background Bermuda gained internal self government with the introduction of a constitution in 1968 and for the first 30 years afterwards the United Bermuda Party was in power. Their domination was broken by defeat in the 1998 election leading to the Progressive Labour Party winning government for the first time. 2020 Bermudian General Election
General elections were held in Bermuda on 1 October 2020 to elect all 36 members of the House of Assembly of Bermuda, House of Assembly. On 21 August 2020 Premier of Bermuda, Premier Edward David Burt announced that Governor of Bermuda John Rankin (diplomat), John Rankin has accepted his advice to call a snap election. The election resulted in the largest victory for one party since party politics began in Bermuda in 1968, as the Progressive Labour Party won 62% of the vote and 30 of 36 seats (including 3 seats where they ran unopposed). Sandys Parish
Sandys Parish ( "sands") is one of the nine parishes of Bermuda. It is named for English aristocrat Sir Edwin Sandys (1561–1629), and hence there is no apostrophe in the name. It is located in the south west of the island chain, occupying the three islands of Ireland Island, Boaz Island, and the larger Somerset Island, as well as a small part of the main island of Bermuda. These islands make up the western coast of the Great Sound, the large expanse of water which dominates the geography of western Bermuda, where it is joined to Southampton parish. Like most other parishes in Bermuda, it covers 2.3 square miles (about 6.0 km2 or 1500 acres). It had a population of 6,983 in 2016. Kim Wilson (politician)
Kim Wilson is a Bermudian politician and lawyer, who is Minister of Health for the Government of Bermuda. Elected to parliament in 2012, Wilson has held several ministries, as a member of the Progressive Labour Party. Career Wilson studied for a BSc in Psychology at the University of Illinois. She then moved to further study, first at Indiana University for a M.Ed in Counselling, followed by an LLB (Hons) from the School of Oriental and African Studies. She was called to the Bermuda Bar in 1995. Her political career began in October 2006 when she was appointed as a Government Senator in the Upper House and as Junior Minister of Finance and Education. She was subsequently appointed Attorney-General and Minister of Justice in December 2007. In 2010 she was the first person to be appointed Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. One Bermuda Alliance
The One Bermuda Alliance (OBA) is one of two political parties in Bermuda with elected members of the Bermuda's legislative assembly. It was created in May 2011 by the merger of most members of Bermuda's two non-Labour parties, the United Bermuda Party and the Bermuda Democratic Alliance. It won the 2012 election and governed until 2017. Since then, it has been the official opposition in Bermuda's Assembly (currently holding 6 of the Assembly's 36 seats). Bermudian General Election, 2012
General elections were held in Bermuda on 17 December 2012 to elect all 36 members of the House of Assembly. The result was a victory for the One Bermuda Alliance, led by Craig Cannonier, which won 19 seats in the House of Assembly. The incumbent Progressive Labour Party (PLP) lost five seats and government, and Premier Paula Cox lost her Devonshire North West seat, and resigned as leader of the PLP the next day, with Derrick Burgess becoming Acting Party Leader. William Alexander Scott
William Alexander Scott (born 1940) is a politician in Bermuda who is the MP for the Warwick South East constituency. Between 2003 and 2006 he served as the Premier of Bermuda and leader of the Progressive Labour Party (PLP). Early life The son of Willard Scott and Edith Lucille Scott of Khyber Pass, Warwick, Scott grew up in Warwick and attended Purvis Primary School, Berkeley Institute and Temple University in Philadelphia, where he obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. Ewart Brown
Ewart Frederick Brown Jr. (born 1946) is a politician and physician who served as the ninth Premier of Bermuda and leader of the country's Progressive Labour Party (PLP) from 2006 to 2010. He represented Warwick South Central as a Member of Parliament from 1993 to 2010. Born in Bermuda, Brown is a graduate of Howard University and the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). In 1966 he represented Bermuda at the Commonwealth Games in Jamaica. Premier Brown was elected leader of the ruling Progressive Labour Party on 30 October 2006, defeating incumbent leader and Premier William Alexander Scott, at a PLP delegates conference.
