Mathematics
Mathematics is an area of knowledge that includes the topics of numbers, formulas and related structures, shapes and the spaces in which they are contained, and quantities and their changes. Bernoulli Society
The Bernoulli Society is a professional association which aims to further the progress of probability and mathematical statistics, founded as part of the International Statistical Institute in 1975. It is named after the Bernoulli family of mathematicians and scientists whose researchers covered "most areas of scientific knowledge". Institute Of Mathematical Statistics
The Institute of Mathematical Statistics is an international professional and scholarly society devoted to the development, dissemination, and application of statistics and probability. The Institute currently has about 4,000 members in all parts of the world. Beginning in 2005, the institute started offering joint membership with the Bernoulli Society for Mathematical Statistics and Probability as well as with the International Statistical Institute. The Institute was founded in 1935 with Harry C. Carver and Henry L. Rietz as its two most important supporters. The institute publishes a variety of journals, and holds several international conference every year. Probability Theory
Probability theory is the branch of mathematics concerned with probability. Although there are several different probability interpretations, probability theory treats the concept in a rigorous mathematical manner by expressing it through a set of axioms. Typically these axioms formalise probability in terms of a probability space, which assigns a measure taking values between 0 and 1, termed the probability measure, to a set of outcomes called the sample space. Any specified subset of the sample space is called an event. Central subjects in probability theory include discrete and continuous random variables, probability distributions, and stochastic processes (which provide mathematical abstractions of non-deterministic or uncertain processes or measured quantities that may either be single occurrences or evolve over time in a random fashion). David Aldous
David John Aldous FRS (born 13 July 1952) is a mathematician known for his research on probability theory and its applications, in particular in topics such as exchangeability, weak convergence, Markov chain mixing times, the continuum random tree and stochastic coalescence. He entered St. John's College, Cambridge, in 1970 and received his Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge in 1977 under his advisor, D. J. H. Garling. Since 1979 Aldous has been on the faculty at University of California, Berkeley. He was awarded the Rollo Davidson Prize in 1980, the Loรจve Prize in 1993, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1994. In 2004, Aldous was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. From 2004 to 2010, Aldous was an Andrew Dickson White Professor-at-Large at Cornell University. Geoffrey Grimmett
Geoffrey Richard Grimmett (born 20 December 1950) is a mathematician known for his work on the mathematics of random systems arising in probability theory and statistical mechanics, especially percolation theory and the contact process. He is the Professor of Mathematical Statistics in the Statistical Laboratory, University of Cambridge, and was the Master of Downing College, Cambridge, from 2013 to 2018. Education Grimmett was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham and Merton College, Oxford. He graduated in 1971, and completed his DPhil in 1974 under the supervision of John Hammersley and Dominic Welsh. Career and research Grimmett served as the IBM Research Fellow at New College, Oxford, from 1974 to 1976 before moving to the University of Bristol. Laurent Saloff-Coste
Laurent Saloff-Coste (born 1958) is a French mathematician whose research is in Analysis, Probability theory, and Geometric group theory. Saloff-Coste received his "doctorat de 3eme cycle" in 1983 at the Pierre and Marie Curie University, Paris VI. He completed his "Doctorat d'Etat" in 1989 under Nicholas Varopoulos. In the 1990s, he worked as "Directeur de Recherche" (CNRS) at Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse. Since 1998, he is a professor of Mathematics at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where he was chair from 2009 to 2015. Saloff-Coste works in the areas of analysis and probability theory, including problems involving geometry and partial differential equations. In particular, he has studied the behavior of diffusion processes on manifolds and their fundamental solutions, in connection to the geometry of the underlying spaces.
