Privatbanen Sønderjylland
Privatbanen Sønderjylland ApS (abbreviated PBS, also known under the byname EuroRail) was a Danish railway operating company that existed between 1997 and 2001. Unlike other Danish railway companies at the time, PBS was an attempt to provide railway service on a purely commercial basis and entirely unsubsidised. Headquartered in Tønder in South Jutland, the company specialised in freight transport around most of Jutland. Noted for its numerous battles with bureaucracy, the company was partially successful in getting otherwise closed freight lines up and running again. Motive power was obtained primarily through buying second-hand diesel locomotives from DSB, and a number of freight cars were leased from NS, the Dutch railways. After several attempts to save the company, PBS was declared bankrupt in 2001. A new company, TraXion, was established and based on the remains of PBS, but was also commercially unsuccessful. Tønder
Tønder (; german: Tondern ) is a town in the Region of Southern Denmark. With a population of 7,505 (as of 1 January 2022), it is the main town and the administrative seat of the Tønder Municipality. History The first mention of Tønder might have been in the mid-12th century, when the Arab geographer Muhammad al-Idrisi mentioned the landmark ''Tu(r)ndira'', which might have been a reference to either Tønder, or the nearby town of Møgeltønder. Tønder was granted port privileges by the Hanseatic League in 1243, making it Denmark's oldest privileged market town. Rail transport (also known as train transport) is a means of transport that transfers passengers and goods on wheeled vehicles running on rails, which are incorporated in tracks. Southern Jutland ( da, Sønderjylland; German: Südjütland) is the name for the region south of the Kongeå in Jutland, Denmark and north of the Eider (river) in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The region north of the Kongeå is called da, Nørrejylland, lit=Northern Jutland, label=none. Both territories had their own ting assemblies in the Middle Ages (in Viborg and Urnehoved). As an attempt to continue the activities of the bankrupt Privatbanen Sønderjylland (PBS/EuroRail), the company specialised in freight transport and operated on an independent commercial basis, as opposed to the approach of ownership of railway companies by the state or local authorities which is more prevalent in Denmark. Based in Padborg, Southern Jutland, TraXion was formed in late March 2001 by former PBS manager Erik Panduro.
