Pornpetch Wichitcholchai ( th, พรเพชร วิชิตชลชัย, ; born 1 August 1948) is a Thai lawyer who has served as the President of the Senate of Thailand since 24 May 2019. He was previously President of the National Legislative Assembly from August 2014 to May 2019. Education Pornpetch attended high school at Vajiravudh College. He studied law at Chulalongkorn University, obtaining a bachelor's degree, and undertook postgraduate studies at the Harvard Law School, obtaining a master's degree. The National Legislative Assembly of Thailand ( th, สภานิติบัญญัติแห่งชาติ; ; abrv: NLA) was the unicameral legislative branch of the government of Thailand during the National Council for Peace and Order military junta between 2014 and 2019. The NLA was established after the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) ratified the 2014 constitution, thus making the NLA the only parliamentary body of Thailand for the period of military rule. The NLA was created to temporarily replace the elected National Assembly of Thailand (NAT) after General Prayut Chan-o-cha seized power from the civilian caretaker government during the 2013-2014 Thai political crisis. The speaker of a deliberative assembly, especially a legislative body, is its presiding officer, or the chair. The title was first used in 1377 in England. The speaker's official role is to moderate debate, make rulings on procedure, announce the results of votes, and the like.
