Premier Volleyball League
The Premier Volleyball League (PVL) is a women's professional volleyball league in the Philippines organized by Sports Vision Management Group, Inc. The league began in 2004 as the Shakey's V-League, a women's collegiate league. Since 2011, the league became open to participation of corporate clubs and other non-collegiate teams. The Spikers' Turf has served as the men's counterpart of the league. Jun Bernardino
Emilio "Jun" Bernardino, Jr. (November 9, 1947 – March 24, 2007) was the fifth commissioner of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). He was elected as commissioner of the league in 1994 and retired in 2002. He served as the commissioner of the Shakey's V-League and of the 2006-07 season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (Philippines). Early life Bernardino was a member of the Ateneo de Manila High School Blue Eaglets basketball team and played for the University of the Philippines, Diliman Fighting Maroons during his collegiate days. Bernardino graduated with a degree in Sports Management at the University of the Philippines. UST Golden Tigresses Women's Volleyball
The UST Golden Tigresses are the intercollegiate women’s volleyball team of the UST Growling Tigers representing the University of Santo Tomas in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines. Their head coach as of April 17, 2015 is former Golden Spiker Kungfu Reyes who is also the coach of their junior girls’ volleyball program. They are one of the UAAP’s winningest teams with 16 championships, the last coming in UAAP Season 72 volleyball tournaments, 2010 against the De La Salle Lady Spikers. The Tigresses swept their elimination games in 1988, 1993 and UAAP Season 59, 1996 and were declared automatic champions in each of those years. Shakey's Pizza is a pizza restaurant chain based in the United States. Founded in 1954, it was the first franchise pizza chain in the United States. In 1968, the chain had 342 locations. The chain had about 500 stores globally, and 58 in the United States, as of July 2019. CESAFI
The Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) is a sports and academic association of 14 schools, colleges and universities in Cebu, Philippines. The CESAFI was established in 2001. The National Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball tournament occurs every second semester of the academic year. It is divided into three divisions: the Juniors division for high school male students and the Seniors division which is subdivided into Men's Senior division for male college students and Women's Senior division for female college students. UAAP Volleyball Championship
The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) volleyball tournament is divided into four divisions, namely men's, women's, boys' and girls'. Volleyball is a mandatory sport in the women's division. The UAAP volleyball tournament was held in the first semester of the school year until the UAAP Board decided to move it to the second semester in Season 69 (school year 2006–2007). This decision was made so that the games can be televised to improve its popularity. Tournament format The tournament begins with a double round robin group stage, where a team meets its opponent twice in a season. A semi-finals round composed of the top four teams follows, after which the top two teams meet in a best-of-three series Finals. Moying Martelino
Mauricio "Moying" Martelino (March 21, 1935 – September 22, 2021) was a Filipino sports executive who was involved in bowling, basketball, and volleyball. He was secretary general of the Asian Basketball Confederation from 1991 to 1998. Background Mauricio Martelino was part of the Philippine Bowling Congress in the 1970s as its secretary general. He played bowling himself and was a regular at the old Bowling Inn in Taft Avenue, which was near his residence in Malate. His brother-in-law Gonzalo Puyat II convinced him to move to the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP), where Martelino also served as its secretary general. Spikers' Turf
The Spikers' Turf is a men's semi-professional volleyball league in the Philippines associated with the Sports Vision Management Group, Inc. (Sports Vision). History The league had its beginnings in 2014, when the Shakey's V-League introduced a men's division during its 21st conference. The following year, Sports Vision decided to spin-off the men's division as a separate league, giving birth to the Spikers' Turf. In late-2016, Sports Vision announced that the league be merged back in the 2017 season with the Shakey's V-League (which was renamed as the Premier Volleyball League; PVL). The men's division in the PVL ended with the 2018 PVL Collegiate Conference as its final tournament.
