Premier League Pairs Championship
The SGB Championship Pairs Championship formerly the Premier League Pairs Championship (from 1997 to 2016) is a motorcycle speedway contest for the second tier teams in the SGB Championship in the United Kingdom. The teams consist of the top two riders from each club competing. The meetings comprise ten teams of two riders drawn into two qualifying groups. Rules Gate positions In the ''Qualification Heats'', riders are allocated starting gates. For the ''Semi-Finals'', the group winners have first choice of gate positions (A&C or B&D). Gate A is on the inside of the track, whilst Gate D is on the outside. For the ''Final'', the gate positions (A&C and B&D) are decided by the toss of a coin. Points scoring All heats are scored as follows: *1st = 4pts *2nd = 3pts *3rd = 2pts *4th = 0pts This system is used to encourage team riding. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . There are now both domestic and international competitions in a number of countries, including the Speedway World Cup, whilst the highest overall scoring individual in the Speedway Grand Prix events is pronounced the world champion. Newport Wasps
Newport Wasps were a British motorcycle speedway team based in Newport, South Wales from 1964 to 2012. They were the 1999 Conference League champions. The Wasp logo incorporates the traditional black and amber colours of the City of Newport. History 1964–1977 Newport Wasps first competed in the 1964 Provincial Speedway League (division 2), they finished a creditable fourth and also won the division 2 version of the Knockout Cup, when winning the Provincial League Knockout Cup during their debut season. The following season they joined the inaugural British League season (the top division) and would remain in the top division until 1977. The team weas based at the now-defunct Somerton Park stadium, which was also the home of football and greyhound racing. Adam Shields (born 8 February 1977 in Kurri Kurri, New South Wales), is an Australian international speedway rider who has ridden for multiple teams in the British speedway. Speedway career He first rode in the UK for Premier League team the Isle of Wight Islanders in 2002, before stepping up to the Elite League for Eastbourne Eagles and then the Lakeside Hammers in 2007. Bjarne Aagaard Pedersen (born 12 July 1978 in Holstebro, Denmark)Oakes, P.(2006). Jesper Olsen (speedway Rider)
Jesper Ege Olsen (born 10 February 1967) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from Denmark. Career Olsen started racing in the British leagues during the 1991 British League season, when riding for the Wimbledon Dons but following the Dons withdrawal from the league in June, he completed the season with Eastbourne Eagles. The following season in 1992, he signed for Glasgow Tigers and would spend four years with the Scottish club. He was part of the famous Glasgow league and cup double/double winning team during the 1993 British League Division Two season and 1994 British League Division Two season. Newcastle Diamonds were a motorcycle speedway team that raced in the SGB Championship, every Sunday night during the season (March–October) from their home at the Newcastle Stadium on the Fossway, Byker. The Stadium, previously known as Brough Park, is primarily used for greyhound racing with the speedway track built in the centre. The Isle of Wight Wightlink Warriors (formerly Islanders) are a British speedway team. They last competed in the 2019 National Development League and ride their home meetings at the Smallbrook Stadium. History Isle of Wight speedway began at the Smallbrook Stadium in the 1996 Speedway Conference League. The team known as the Ryde Wight Wizards finished 4th in the table. Michael George Powell (born 24 September 1969) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from Australia. Career Powell started his British leagues career during the 1989 National League season, where he rode for Edinburgh Monarchs. He spent two seasons with Edinburgh and struggled to find consistent form, before moving to Scottish rivals Glasgow Tigers in 1991. He spent five years with Glasgow from 1991 to 1995, slowly improving his average and recorded a 7.43 average in 1993. He was part of the team that won the 'double double' (the 1993 and 1994 league and cup doubles).
