Mick Powell (speedway Rider)
Michael George Powell (born 24 September 1969) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from Australia. Career Powell started his British leagues career during the 1989 National League season, where he rode for Edinburgh Monarchs. He spent two seasons with Edinburgh and struggled to find consistent form, before moving to Scottish rivals Glasgow Tigers in 1991. He spent five years with Glasgow from 1991 to 1995, slowly improving his average and recorded a 7.43 average in 1993. He was part of the team that won the 'double double' (the 1993 and 1994 league and cup doubles). In 1996, Glasgow failed to field a team so Powell appeared for the controversial Scottish Monarchs (Edinburgh racing at Glasgow) during the 1996 Premier League speedway season before returning to Glasgow in 1997. It was during 1997 that Powell established himself as one of Glasgow's leading riders and the following season in 1998 averaged an impressive 9.32. Derwent Park is a Speedway and Rugby League Stadium in Workington, England situated beside the Cumbrian River Derwent. 1996 Premier League Speedway Season
The 1996 Premier League season was the 62nd season of the top tier of speedway in the United Kingdom. It was also the second and last edition of two seasons, in which British speedway was competed as a single division. In addition there was a Conference League. As from 1997 the Elite League would be the top division and the Premier League would be the second division. Summary The one league set up only lasted for a second season due to the huge disparity between the sides. Wolverhampton Wolves won the title for the second time in six years, with American Ronnie Correy being the sole survivor of the 1991 winning team. In a strange coincidence a new set of two brothers helped Wolves win the title, back in 1991 it was the Ermolenko brothers but now it was the Swedish Karlsson brothers. The British Newspaper Archive web site provides access to searchable digitized archives of British and Irish newspapers. It was launched in November 2011. History The British Library Newspapers section was based in Colindale in north London, until 2013, and is now divided between the St Pancras and Boston Spa sites. The library has an almost complete collection of British and Irish newspapers since 1840. This is partly because of the legal deposit legislation of 1869, which required newspapers to supply a copy of each edition of a newspaper to the library. London editions of national daily and Sunday newspapers are complete back to 1801. In total, the collection consists of 660,000 bound volumes and 370,000 reels of microfilm containing tens of millions of newspapers with 52,000 titles on 45 km of shelves. The Edinburgh Monarchs are a Scottish Speedway team, currently based in Armadale. They compete in the SGB Championship, racing on Friday nights during the Speedway season. The club is run by a board of directors, chaired by Alex Harkess. The club also runs a National Development League team called the Armadale Devils. History The club was founded in 1928 and operated at Marine Gardens, Portobello in 1929, 1930, 1931, 1938 and 1939. A few team matches were staged in 1929 and an Edinburgh team competed in the Northern League in 1930.
