Portsmouth (Mike Oldfield Single)
"Portsmouth" is a traditional English folk music, English folk dance tune, similar to an Irish or Scottish hornpipe melody. It is sometimes referred to as the "Portsmouth Hornpipe". "Portsmouth" appeared in the 11th edition of John Playford's ''The Dancing Master'' in 1701. It is also one of the three arrangements on which English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams based his ''Sea Songs'', originally arranged for military band in 1923 as the second movement of his ''English Folk Song Suite'', and subsequently re-arranged for full orchestra in 1942 by the composer. ''The Dancing Master'' (first edition: ''The English Dancing Master'') is a dancing manual containing the music and instructions for English country dances. It was first published in 1651 by John Playford. History It was published in several editions by John Playford and his successors from 1651 until . The first edition contained 105 dances with single-line melodies. The 1651 book ''The Dancing Master'' by John Playford had been designed for teaching dancing. It was originally small so that the dancing master could hide it under his cloak and consult it surreptitiously. Subsequent editions introduced new songs and dances, while dropping others, and the work eventually encompassed three volumes. Dances from ''The Dancing Master'' were re-published in arrangements by Cecil Sharp in the early 20th century. William Tell Overture (Mike Oldfield Single)
"William Tell Overture" is a single by musician Mike Oldfield, released in 1977. It is a rendition of the last movement (''Allegro molto'') from Gioachino Rossini's ''William Tell Overture'', played in a deliberately much slower arrangement than Rossini's original piece. This version of the ''William Tell Overture'' did not have much of an impact on the UK charts. It is the first of the two non-album singles released by Mike Oldfield in 1977. B-sides The UK B-side was "Argiers", which had previously been the European b-side for an earlier Oldfield single "Portsmouth". "Argiers" had been recorded in January 1976 at Througham and features Leslie Penning on recorders. Some European versions included the track "First Excursion" as the B-side, however in Brazil the B-side was "Portsmouth". Quadraphonic (or quadrophonic and sometimes quadrasonic) sound – equivalent to what is now called 4.0 surround sound – uses four audio channels in which speakers are positioned at the four corners of a listening space. The system allows for the reproduction of sound signals that are (wholly or in part) independent of one another. Four channel quadraphonic surround sound can be used to recreate the highly realistic effect of a three-dimensional live concert hall experience in the home. ''Boxed'' is a 1976 compilation album of music written and performed by Mike Oldfield. It features four channel quadraphonic remix versions of his first three albums:''Tubular Bells'', ''Hergest Ridge'' and ''Ommadawn''. An additional fourth LP contains new musical collaborations with other artists. Each record is encoded in the SQ Quadraphonic matrix system, which is also compatible with standard two channel stereo playback systems. Background Following the release of Ommadawn in October 1975, Virgin Records released Boxed to cover both the gap until the release of Oldfield's next album (Incantations, eventually released in December 1978), and his reluctance to play live. "Moonlight Shadow" is a song written and performed by English multi-instrumentalist Mike Oldfield, released as a single in May 1983 by Virgin Records, and included on his eighth album, ''Crises'', of the same year. The Irish Singles Chart is the Republic of Ireland's music industry standard singles popularity chart issued weekly by the Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA) and compiled on their behalf by the Official Charts Company.
